liquor laws in your state/city?

This is interesting to me - I am curious!

So I am in Milwaukee, WI, and here is what we have to deal with:
  • all alcohol sales at stores stop at 9pm
  • if you are under 21 but with a parent you can be served alcohol - at the discretion of the venue
  • bars are open until 2-2:30am (depends on the establishment) - BUT on New Years they can be open all night
  • alcohol/beer is sold in lots of different stores (groceries, pharmacies, gas stations, etc.)
  • if you are 18 you can serve and sell alcohol but not consume it (unless with a parent, as above)

Re: liquor laws in your state/city?

  • In Virginia, I can buy beer&wine at my local grocery stores/gas stations/etc, but I have to go to an ABC store to buy any kind of liquor.
Oh, just discovered there's no age limit on selling alcohol, as long as there's another employee who's 21 yrs+ present.
Apparently there are happy hour laws! Crazy. (Patron may not have more than 2 drinks at a time, and sellers can't do single-priced, unlimited drink specials, free drinks or 2-for-1 specials)

Indiana's laws are so much more fascinating. Some highlights:

It is unlawful to dispense alcoholic beverages on Christmas Day. Alcoholic Beverages may not be served or sold from 3:00am, local prevailing time on December 25th until 7:00am, local prevailing time on December 26th.
It is a criminal offense to sell or furnish alcoholic beverages to an intoxicated person.
Those persons under 21 years old may be employed at a permit premise provided they do not handle, serve, or sell alcoholic beverages.

If I recall correctly, you can only buy beer & wine in grocery stores - unsure about gas stations.

  • Apparently NJ is the most unique and complex. I never thought about any of this before.

    Some stuff I did know:

    • No alcohol in "sexually erotic" places
    • BYOB restaurants are common cause liquor licenses are very expensive and there are a limited number in towns
    • Some towns are dry
    • Have to be 21
    • Legal to drink on public transportation (Trains and buses - when I commuted to NYC, at the end of the day, everyone had a brown bag with a beer in it.)

  • @SewInLovewithDMB - BYOB in NJ is helping me save money for my Rehearsal Dinner with the BYOB!

My FI and I recently moved to a town in MD that JUST lifted prohibition in this past election! We moved here in November so it was perfect timing. Only three of the restaurants in the town decided to start serving so far - and they are only allowed to serve beer and wine.  It was VERY entertaining seeing "townies" reactions. :)

  • Oh @snippet17 - you mentioned something interesting!

Some weddings I've attended won't allow shots, some do. I never thought to ask our venue (cause it doesn't matter to me.) The way to get around it is to ask for a little "cup" of vodka (or whatever) and then just drink it.

  • Thought of another-  can't drive with an open bottle of wine. So, after eating at a BYOB place, your leftover bottle is a thought-provoker. Do you leave the wine? Do you take it?

Some of you are thinking "What is leftover wine?"

But, if you drink the entire bottle, you theoretically *could* get a DUI.

Haha Hannah! Our ordinance in some towns we can still get it til Midnight!!!

  • That 9pm cutoff really sucks at 8:30 when you're running low!

  • Also in Michigan we can buy alcohol until 2am in stores and bars.  Used to be you couldn't buy alcohol on a Sunday anywhere prior to noon...they passed a law last year that you can buy anytime on a Sunday now.
  • my brother's wedding they weren't allowed to do shots - but it was a venue policy not the state policy.
