What is proper?

Hi!

I am wondering what the proper etiquette will be for the situation we are in. My FI is 9 years older than me and has owned a house for 7 years. I have lived on my own since I was 18. (I am 22 now) Since we have been on our own, we have pretty much everything we need for our house. We've came up with a total of 6 things that we need. Everything we have is relatively new, as well. Should we just register for the things we have and replace them? Many people have mentioned doing a honeymoon registry, but I just don't know how I feel about that! I WILL NOT just ask people for money, because that's just not okay to do. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do for this situation? We also do not have a basement or any storage area so that limits our possibilities a lot as well. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Make a small registry. A honeymoon registry is tacky, so steer clear.

  • I totally understand where you're coming from - we're in the same situation. Just register for the 6 things you need (honestly, you may find more things by browsing the store or their website - we ended up finding over 20 things when I thought we wouldn't find any). When people see a very small registry, they get the hint that you'd probably prefer or could just plain use cash. Ditto PPs on the honeymoon registries - I'm a bit embarrassed to say, but I looked into them briefly when we got engaged last year. Not only are they considered rude, but as Liatris mentioned, the sites take a cut of the money!

Can you upgrade things like sheets, towels, pots/ pans?

  • Register for the 6 things you need and also for things you'll need down the road. If people ask you where you can say, "we have a few things on a BBB registry, but we're saving up for ________." Don't directly say cash.

If you don't register, people who don't feel comfortable giving cash will give you something you probably don't want/need (read: lots and lots of picture frames).

  • Either 1) make a small registry with those 6 things, plus some back up replacement items like sheets and towels, or 2) just don't register.

Either way, I would skip showers and casually mention that you really don't need anything when people ask about registries.
