Steam or Iron A Wedding Dress

My dress needs to be ironed, should I steam it or iron it? \

Im worried my hand-me-down old iron will drip rust water onto the dress like it does my work pants... so im wondering which is the best route, steaming or ironing?? Or which route other brides have done with their dress? Will steaming the dress actually smooth out the fabric? Im not too familiar with steaming. Any help is appreciated.

Steaming.  Don't iron a wedding gown. Most wedding gown fabric will burn or melt from the heat of an iron.  Buy a cheapo steamer from target. Steaming works wonders!
  • I agree with the above, invest in a budget friendly steamer. I purchased one before our wedding because I was making my dress from silk and it wrinkled easily. Worked wonders. We only use it maybe once or twice a year, but at least we have it. You never want to iron something as special as your wedding gown before or after the wedding.
  • Steam it. Most alteration places will do this for you.

I wasn't brave enough to steam or iron my dress. I hung it out of its bag for about 7-10 days prior to the wedding and most of the wrinkles fell out.
  • If you have to iron it, I've ironed delicate fabrics by putting a cotton hankie over it and putting on the lowest setting. Don't leave it sitting in one spot for any length of time - keep the iron moving. You could also hang it up in the bathroom while you're showering. The steam should help the wrinkles to release.
  • My alterations place steamed mine. I would probably take it somewhere if I were you; I would never trust myself to get it right.

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14
