Ceremony timing help

Hey all,

My venue has 30 min alloted for the ceremony but I honestly can't see it going past 15-20 min.  Both my FI and I are writing our own vows but that obviously won't take that long.  And we're not having a religious ceremony so there won't be any hymns sung or readings..  it's pretty much going to be a "wham, bam, thank you man" kind of ceremony.  Too short/impersonal?  Any ideas to make it a wee bit longer without being obnoxious?  I'm not a fan of sand/unity candle type things.  Thanks in advance!

Re: Ceremony timing help

  • Don't add anything random unless it's very personal to you.  You could have a guest do a non-religious reading if you have someone important you want to include in the ceremony.  There is nothing wrong with a short ceremony.  Mine lasted maybe 14 minutes from the time I started walking down the aisle until the "kiss".  We were happy, the wedding party was happy, and the guests could start drinking!   Nothing wrong with short and sweet.

  • Super short ceremonies are awesome,

  • Short ceremonies are great, but my BFFs wedding was kind of like a drive by. I think it was like 10 minutes total. Do you have any readings from literature that you could have read? I'm also not a fan of the wine/sand/candles, so if you have nothing particularly meaningful, just go with a short ceremony. No big deal.
  • Our ceremony only lasted 20 minutes if that.  Our friend married us and said some very nice things.  We said our vows, exchanged the rings, kissed and we were done.  Don't draw the ceremony out just because you have been given 30 minutes for it.  I honestly prefer shorter ceremonies then ones' that are drawn out with a crap ton of readings and songs and what not.

  • Short ceremonies can be very beautiful.
  • Thanks!  I wasn't sure if it'd be weird to have a short ceremony, but it seems pretty normal!

Short is great.  Just FYI, the phrase is "Wham, bam, thank you ma'am."

  • How does one know exactly how long your ceremony will be? I tried to read (very slowly) the script I customized and it went to around 7 minutes long. Add 5 minutes for the personal vows (just in case we both stutter and end up crying). But I can't figure out how long the procession and contract signing lasts. We do not have the luxury of doing a rehearsal since we're doing a destination wedding.
