Taking e-ring on honeymoon?

So I am not sure if I should take my engagement ring with me on my honeymoon or not! What are you doing or what did you do?

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Taking e-ring on honeymoon? : With proper insurance I think you can wear your engagement ring anywhere. . . . I agree with turning it though.  My engagement ring is a solitaire and it is set pretty high off my finger.  When I go to questionable areas abroad, or even close to home, I always turn it inside so as to not draw attention.

i do the same turning it inward. i sometimes do it on the subway here too. it's not just out of town.

  • I always think it is funny when people get in a tissy about this question.

I tend to take my ring off a lot specifically on vacations because we are doing a lot of walking and my fingers tend to swell a lot when I do a lot of walking (No idea why!). I tend to have a habit of taking my ring off at work and at home. I forget my ring at home at least once a week. I have put it through the washer and misplaced it at home before. I personally bought a small band to wear when we travel not because I am scared of getting mugged or anything but because I would rather not lose it. I have insurance on it, and it covers the ring and the band because we paid a pretty penny for them. But knowing me, and how I am I would rather not have that to worry about. We went to Las Vegas a couple weeks ago and I didn't take it there either. I just think it is a preference thing.

I get if you are the type of person who takes it off a lot and tends to forget it and you would rather not worry about it on vacation.

But what irks me is when people pull the "I am not going to wear my ring on my HM because I don't want to be targeted and have it stolen."  It is like they just presume that any place outside of the US is this criminally laiden land that anyone wearing any kind of jewelry is going to get mugged at gun point and that something like that could never happen here in the US.

But hey, if it is your preference not to wear you jewelry on vacations period just because you know how you are with your pieces and don't want the worry/stress then great.  But I think it is incredibly dumb and naive to pull the "but I don't want to get robbed" card.

  • We are going to Thailand on our honeymoon and I will not be taking my engagement ring with me. My wedding band is a plain platinum band- as I wanted something that I could always wear no matter what activities we are doing. We do a lot of things that my beautiful ring has no business being around.

We are doing a lot of activities - SCUBA diving, hiking, climbing, bathing elephants,

We are doing a lot of outdoors activities and I just feel better leaving it at home as I would be taking it off during those activities so most of the time it would be in the hotel safe.

It isn't about safety or crime or anything like that. I don't wear it when we go diving as it attracts oceanlife, I don't wear it when I climb at home either.

I think preference is all that matters. No need to jump on anyone for their own reasons.

:-) you all keep using the phrase 'hotel safe' which also speaks to the types of travel many of you like. Mostly safe, mostly based out of a hotel where you could potentially leave it in a safe.

Soon I'll leave for 3 weeks in Colombia and Venezuela. We'll be hiking, diving, riding around in tiny boats, wading through rivers in the jungle, sleeping in hammocks in stilted cabins on a river, taking buses during the day and at night. We'll be staying in inexpensive hotels and exploring the sites. Nothing about that screams 'take a big diamond ring along'.

[QUOTE]Wow. I never take my ring off. Not at night. Not in the shower. Not on vacation. The only times I can remember doing so was when I painted our living room and when I patty up burgers or meatloaf with my hands.

I'm the same way.  I couldn't imagine taking it off every night.  The only time I take my ring off is when I use lotion on my hands or when we do sparring and board breaking in my taekwondo class.

Yeah I would not take my ring if I were you...

  • My mom took both of her rings (her 25th anniversary and engagement ring) to Ireland. One lost a diamond from some of the activities and she was sad, but it was covered and got it fixed when we got home, but she was really paranoid the rest of the trip and was uncomfortable wearing it but didn't want to take them off and lose them.

If you don't mind taking it off and you think you will be concerned, I wouldn't wear it and just wear you wedding band.  If something happens you can't really just leave it by the sink at home because you will be staying at a hotel or w/e and those aren't completely safe.  You don't want to be thinking about losing or breaking your ring the whole trip. You want to be enjoying the moment. But on the other hand if you would feel uncomfortable the whole trip without it, bring it.

  • I didn't take mine with me because we went on a cruise and had a ton of activities planned on the islands. I wasn't scared of it being stolen but being lost or damaged. I bought a fake $25 set on o.co that I wore to dinner and on the boat.

  • I've never left my rings at home for any trip we've taken. I wear mine at the gym, showering, swimming, etc..

We both always wear our rings and have worn them snorkeling, river tubing, parasailing, hiking to waterfalls, jet skiing, swimming, etc..

Just make sure they fit correctly (won't slip off) and that they're insured.

I just bought a fake set that looked similar to mine to. Just gave me peace of mind because we went to Jamaica for two weeks and I was afraid of accidentally losing it. I guess it depends on what type of vacation your going on.

I have worn mine on vacations and never had a problem but it just depends on how active you are. Applying sunscreen, swimming, snorkeling, digging in the sand and other things make me a little nervous I might lose it. If you feel that way too, then you might want to leave it at home for peace of mind.

  • I'm sitting at the pool's edge in kauai right now. Rings on and still looking fabulous! Never once got concerned about having them on.

  • I've worn my engagement ring on every vacation we've taken since getting engaged and I wore my e-ring and wedding band on our HM. I wore it at the pool, at the beach, and swimming with sharks in the middle of the ocean. I never take my rings off and traveling is no exception.

  • I don't think you should take it on vacation. I wouldn't.
  • I plan on taking mine. I just know in my head I'll want to wear it to dinner, and different things. It's insured.. I wear it in the shower, I'll wear it by the pool. Its sized right and slightly tighter than necessary so I don't see any issues. I will leave it in the hotel when scuba diving just because some of the excursions require no jewelry (baracudas).

Yeah I wish I was informed of their liking of sparkly things before I sent snorkling with my rings on and a white bikini with shiny gold stars and gold buckles :)  Luckily nothing happened and I got to enjoy the snorkling...my H informed me of this after the fact.

  • like some PP I never take my ring off unless I'm making meatloaf, pizza dough or something really messy. It is very fitted and that's what ring insurance is for! I will be taking to Jamaica and don't plan on taking it off there so I'm not concerned.

  • Am I the only one whose ring is tight enough that it literally cannot just accidentally slide off my finger?

No you are not.  I have never once been afraid that my ring was just going to slip right off.

  • Am I the only one whose ring is tight enough that it literally cannot just accidentally slide off my finger?

Nope, mine never slides of accidentally.

That being said, I do take mine off and leave it at home when we travel.

I just wear a plain gold band I bought on amazon for $60.

I used to wear it on our trips (hm in SL,shore,Jamaica). However, after breaking my prongs (high setting, heart shaped ring) on three separate occasions I gave up and got the gold band instead.

  • I decided to take it on the honeymoon and it was just fine! BUT I did leave it in the safe most of the time especially when I was going to be in the water but other than that I wore it out and what not!

Just checking. It seems whenever these threads come up, posters keep mentioning fear of losing it and I always find that odd. I guess I can see worrying about damaging it, though honestly I am way harder on my ring in my daily life than I am on vacation. I just don't get the worry about "losing" it. If you're wearing it, how do you lose it?

In normal life I would never be afraid of losing it, but my jeweler told us that one of his clients lost a ring when swimming with it in the ocean, saw it laying in the sand, went to go down and get it and all of the sand moved around and it was lost forever. A friend of ours also jumped into the water after their wedding and lost his wedding band.  So it is not totally unheard of. Even with insurance, I would be very sad to lose the ring FI proposed to me with.  That being said, I also take my ring off when I get home and don't always remember to put it on first thing in the morning, so travelling with just the wedding band doesn't really matter to me

  • Of course! I don't ever want to part with it. Also it fits properly so I'm not worried about it falling off or anything like that. If for some reason something comes up that you don't think you should wear your ring to do, then how about locking it up somewhere safe in your room? :)

Ohhhh yeah! I learned the hard way the first time I ever went snorkeling. They guide basically yelled at me once I got in the water and I had to get out, walk to my locker and put it away. I think it was like a toe ring at the time too.

    So lame.
  • I brought my rings with me, but I always take them off at night and when I go into water or wash my hands.  On our HM, my husband and I left our rings in a safe place while we went snorkeling, and I'm very happy we did, since a guy on our boat actually lost his wedding ring in the water during our excursion.
  • We were jetskiing with other honeymooning couples in Bora Bora and one of the men lost his ring.  He said that it was loose to begin with.  So that's part of it, making sure it's fitting to your finger before you go.  We stopped wearing our rings in the water when we saw a 3 ft. barracuda swim past our bungalow.

Yeah, but my point is that your ring SHOULDN'T come off when you jump in the water or whatever.  Those rings were obviously too big. If your ring is properly fitted, it should never just come off your finger willy nilly.

My ring is large enough that I'm afraid it would slip off in the water.  But I tried a half-size smaller, and it is just way too tight and uncomfortable.  Plus there are times when the current size feels a bit too small, too.  So it wouldn't work if I got it sized down again.

I'm hoping once I add the band on my finger with it, everything will fit more securely. :)
