Wedding Invitations & Paper

Private ceremony invitations

Ok so I'm having a private ceremony with a large formal reception. I'm not sure about how invitations should be worded in this scenario. So far for the reception invites I have this:

The pleasure of your company is requested
at the wedding reception of
Jane Smith
&
John Doe
Saturday the sixteenth of November
two thousand thirteen
five o'clock in the evening
Reception Location
123 fake street
Fake town, Illinois

Does this look ok? My next question is what about ceremony invitations to those who are invited. Do we need them? Can we just tell them by word of mouth or is that too casual? Not sure the etiquette of the situation. If I do need them how do I word them?

Re: Private ceremony invitations

  • Definitely do invitations for the ceremony, or you'll end up with unintentional crashers (how are they supposed to know they weren't invited?).

The pleasure of your company is requested
    to celebrate the marriage of
    Jane Smith
    &
    John Doe
    Saturday the sixteenth of November
    two thousand thirteen
    five o'clock in the evening

    Dinner and dancing at
    Reception Location
    123 fake street
    Fake town, Illinois
Something like that. You don't need the word "reception" because that emphasizes that they're not invited to the ceremony. You also need to say what kind of reception it will be: drinks and appetizers, dinner and dancing...

No.  This line should simply say "at the marriage of" because the words "celebrate" and "celebration" imply that the wedding ceremony has already occurred.  "At the marriage of" indicates that the invitation is to the wedding ceremony.
  • I'm only inviting approximately 30 people to the wedding and about 170 to the reception. So what I was thinking I would send everyone a reception invite and instead of reception cards I would print ceremony info on the forum the few who were invited. Is this wrong? Or do i need to do 2 sets of invites for those invited to both?

    This should be fine.
