Engagement Announcements and Save The Dates

So, my photographer is having a baby this fall and she is requiring that we take our engagement shots either this summer or early spring 2014. Our wedding isnt until next July but we chose to take our photos this August. Since we'll have our pictures so early (11 months), i was considering sending out engagement announcements in September and Save the Dates in February (with photos from the same shoot).

Is sending a simple engagement announcement and a save the date doing too much?

Thoughts? And, if we do send the engagement announcements, should we send them to everyone we plan to invite or just a few important folks?

Engagement announcements aren't generally sent directly to people. Just enjoy your photos and wait until you send save the dates.

I've never heard of anyone sending engagement announcements to people; usually they are printed in the newspaper. Perhaps this is common in come circles, but it seems like overkill to me. If I were you, I would use the photos for STDs (which are typically sent 6-9 months out, so you could send them before February). You could also select one photo to use for an engagement announcement in the newspaper.

Ditto PPs. Engagement announcements go in the newspaper. If I received a card announcing someone's engagement, I'd be like, OK, good to know, I guess. Or more likely, Yeah, I figured that out when I saw you change your FB status, but thanks for the additional reminder. Just do STDs.
