Registry - How do guests know what is already taken?

So I'm totally oblivious at this point because I myself have never had any interaction with a registry, and neither has FI. Say for example we have a registry at Bed, Bath and Beyond. How would a guest that is either at a physical store or shopping online know if another guest has already bought a particular item? Do they ask the store attendant/look it up online and it will show as crossed off? If FI and I looked at our registry online would we be able to see what has been bought and what hasn't? I haven't set up any registries yet since we have 10 months to go, but I've started making a list of things we could use and will probably be starting the registering process within the next couple of months. Just curious as to how that process works :)

Re: Registry - How do guests know what is already taken?

  • If a guest looks up your registry online or in store and the item was already purchased, it will show as completed or fulfilled.  If you look at your registry online you will also see what is completed/purchased.
  • When someone buys something off your registry they are supposed to let the clerk who rings them up know so it can be marked as purchased. If they buy it online then it will get marked as long as they go through your registry. If someone looks at your registry and then just goes and buys it later then it won't get marked off as purchased. Yes you will be able to see what people have bought.

  • Also be aware that sometimes things are purchased and not crossed off b/c the purchaser fails to tell the cashier they bought something from a registry.

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Ok thank you :)
  • be prepared that it just may not get marked off.  I definitely received 3 purple coffee pots due to this!  lol.. but it was fine, I thanked all 3 for the coffee pot and returned 2 of them in exchanged for something else on my registry.
