Replacing flowers with succulents?

I am thinking of substituting the use of flowers throughout my wedding with succulents.  This will be an early summer (likely June) wedding using both indoor and outdoor spaces.  I could DIY the centerpieces with some inexpensive succulents, and then actually keep them afterwards for our home!  I am not really using much of a color theme, and am instead doing a lot of neutrals (like a burlap table runner, recycled brown bag color paper for programs, etc.) I just have one bridesmaid and she will be wearing a coral color dress.  I am thinking the only real "flowers" in the wedding would be a few orange/coral colored flowers put into a succulent bouquet for what I hold as I walk down the aisle.  Otherwise... no flowers at all.  Any thoughts on this?  Does it sound like this would be lots cheaper?  TIA.

  • I love the look-I would be using succulents too if we hadn't taken FMIL up on her offer to do more traditional flowers. Check etsy if you're DIYing, there are a couple of sellers with great bulk deals. I don't think it will be lots cheaper; probably just comparable to DIYing with other inexpensive flowers. Still, very pretty!
  • We used succulents, but hired a florist. I love them, and you can keep them growing after your wedding. Putting them in a bouquet would be a little but of a PITA because you have a very short stump to wrap in wire, and then anchor into the bouquet, but it can be done.

I don't know that it would be that much cheaper than buying roses or hydrangeas in bulk from a place like Costco. The bigger succulents usually cost at least $5 each from a wholesaler. But succulents are a lot heartier and you could make your centerpieces days ahead of time, instead of the morning of with flowers.

  • if thats what you want to do i think it's a great idea.

as for the price that would depend greatly on your area and all kinds of other specifics that are impossible to know by your post. but price them out.!!

  • I wanted succulents in my bouquet. We had family friends do the flowers and she found a tutorial online showing how to put them in. She cut the succulent and stuck a stuff wire through the center then added some floral wire around the stock. It worked great. Loved mine! Florist should know this too if you aren't DIY. Ours were only probably $20 worth. In so cal there are a lot of whole sellers but depending on where you are from you should be able to find them at a reasonable price.
