Splurges

What type of wedding related splurges have you made or plan on making?

My first one was my dress. I went in with a budget and came out above it. My mom made me (yup, that is my excuse). My mom ended up paying for half so technically, I was not out of my budget.

Second one was makeup. I knew from the start that I wanted to get all new makeup for the wedding. I went to MAC last weekend and had them test stuff out. Today, I just hit the send button to enter in my order. However, it is stuff I will use again after the wedding.

My last splurge I plan on making is new perfume. I never really spend money on it and mainly use body mists, so I figured why not do something new/different for our wedding.

Re: Splurges

  • I have a few splurges that I have already made and hopefully I won't have anymore!  My jewelry and my hair comb were definitely a splurge although a very good one.  I couldn't be happier with them but it was definitely a lot more then I wanted to spend.  I know I can always sell them afterwards but I honestly don't know if I want to.  I want to keep them because they mean a lot to me and I hope to one day be able to pass them down to my nieces or if I have a daughter (along with my dress).

The other splurge was the 2 horse and carriages at the wedding.  FI didn't think this was necessary but I certainly did!  We are having our ceremony at the same place where we are having our reception.  It is a 250 acre farm and the walk to the ceremony site is a little tricky especially in heels.  I am afraid someone might fall and break an ankle so the venue gives the option of having a horse and wagon to pick the guests up and bring them to the ceremony and then bring them back. It will also bring the bridal party around with us for pictures.  The other horse and carriage is for me on the way to the ceremony and then me and FI to go take pictures afterwards.  I think this is very unique and when I was first told about it, I couldn't resist!

My dress was a splurge. I knew it was going to be and it was!

I've mentioned this, but we hired an event painter as well. By default, it is an additional expense that is not needed for a wedding to happen, but it was important to me and I knew the cost came along with it. This is one of the aspects I am most excited about as well, so it is money well spent.

The bridal party gifts were a splurge - I bought them all silver initial necklaces from Tiffany, and I have 7 bridesmaids. I think they will all enjoy wearing them (both day of and after.)

Our photographer was a semi-splurge. Not the highest quote we got, but higher than the majority of what I found in research. But, we love him.

My reception is most of the budget, but not a splurge by northern NJ rates/standards. It is beautiful and I really like it, but there are other places that could have been double.

(On the flipside, I will be doing my own makeup, my shoes were under $100, I will be borrowing either my mom's or sister's veil, and our honeymoon is not the most expensive trip we will ever take.)

ETA: Also saving money on limo - by not having one! Saved a bunch!!

  • Our biggest splurge is probably the centerpieces.  Rather than DIY or buying everything we are renting everything and for $75 they deliver and set everything up and break it all down.  Since there is now a wedding the Friday before ours we can't get in to the reception place before Saturday afternoon and that day is already busy.  It's such a relief that someone will be taking care of everything and I'm excited to see what the final results will be.

We have been that way on a few things.  We gave our florist some ideas and he's just gonna have fun, we trust him and the same with our baker.  We told her the fillings and she's going to just be creative.  So we'll have a bunch of fun surprises the entire day which I love.
  • I guess the only above-our-budget splurge was the cake. We set higher budgets for the food and photog and DJ (food is important to us, photog to me, and DJ to him).

We're also splurging on the honeymoon - doing some things we wouldn't do on a trip like this (for example: we're starting our first full day in WDW at AK with a 3 hour safari).
  • one of our main splurges was my ring; it was a little above budget; but FI loved it; and thought it was the best thing to go with the e-ring he picked out. I guess we saved a little because he only wanted a simple band. Next splurges a little on a hall; while it is still in the budget of a lot of other local places there was a $600 room fee the others didn't have... I too am doing my own makeup but did buy new products from a couple awesome brands. urban decay and smashbox. I still need new foundation and im sitting around $100 on makeup haha. But it is totally reusable. :)

The makeup I just bought came to around $100. I still need to get new mascara (I need it anyway) and look into foundations. The Mac foundation made me beak out.

  • Groomsmen as zombies and me and FI as zombie fighters cake toppers (grooms cake). That was expensive - but they will look like us and be a fun keepsake for the guys!

My dress was a splurge, but it was so MY DRESS that there wasn't even a second thought.

String lights hanging above the dance floor would have been a splurge, but I was able to take advantage of a promotion our DJ had and I got them included in the price of the rest of our music/lighting package.

Salted caramel filling for our cake was a splurge - it was a flavor they had never made before, only for me, so they normally charge $2.95/person and they upcharged to $3.50 for the new flavor. I didn't care - it was SO DELICIOUS!!

Our entire honeymoon is a splurge, but it's going to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip. I won't be flying for 24hours again - I am dreading it already!

  • Our photographer was a splurge. We are also having a shuttle for all the guests from the hotel to the venue - since it's kind of a hike and a lot of folks are flying in, so this saves most of them from having to rent a car. I am contemplating getting a make-up lesson from MAC. It's kind of expensive, but you get a free mascara and 20% off everything you buy, so it'll still come in under than hiring a make-up artist.

@stina51286 - have you looked at Make-Up Forever? It's supposed to be the best for pictures. Also, Ulta has started selling purse-sized perfumes for some of their most popular brands for $20 - if you don't want to commit to just one. I have the Escada, and will probably head back for Burberry.

  • The only splurge so far is my dress.  So far I'm $120 over budget and that doesn't include alterations yet.  However, I've managed to save almost $400 in other areas, at least for the money we have spent to date, so kind of makes up for that little overage.  :-)

  • Our flowers were a splurge because it was about double what we wanted to spend. And our honeymoon. We are going to a Sandals resort in Jamaica. Can't wait!
  • Our catering ended up being a splurge that was expensive on top of expensive. Also the church is a bit of a splurge since we're not members.
  • My shoes were a major splurge, but I figure I'll be on my feet all day so I might as well be comfortable.

We also went well over budget on the cake to get carrot cake (as an upcharge) as well as just plain chocolate and vanilla.

Finally, we were initially thinking a limited bar (beer, wine, signature cocktail) but splurged on a full open bar instead.
  • Hmm...since we were originally planning to go to Vegas - I guess you could say the whole thing has been a major splurge :)

No - but in all seriousness - I believe the "enhancement" of having full roasted piggies at our carving stations (sorry any vegetarians/vegans) would be our biggest splurge - it will end up being about an extra $400.

@stina51286 - I went to the MAC counter and bought makeup for my engagement shoot. I had such a fun time and I am continuing to wear the makeup. Only thing is FI isn't used to me in makeup and I guess the foundation or powder I have makes me look sparkly.  So I keep joking that I'm a vampire (Twilight reference - they shimmer like diamonds in sunlight). It makes for entertaining banter on our commute into work.

  • Photographer. She's like $1000 more than I wanted to spend, but I really wanted her because I love her photographs so much. I also like that she uses film instead of digital.

Our honeymoon is also going to be a splurge, but totally worth it.

Funny - we specifically cut the roast pig from our menu and told them under no circumstance should it be there. (It wasn't on our specific wedding menu, but could have been, or can be an upgrade, etc) I went to a wedding where there was one and started crying. I'm not a vegetarian.

  • My biggest splruge so far has been my purple petticoat. But, since my dress was such a steal, I feel justified. Other than that, the big splurge is our honeymoon to Iceland.

My splurge would prob be my ring and our photographer.  I love my ring and wouldn't trade it for anything! As for the photo it also included a photobooth.   I am having someone that used to work for MAC come to my parents house to do everyones makeup.  I did save money on the limo, shoes, and cake.
