Kids Roles

I asked this question in another post, but it had multiple questions so it kind of got overlooked. We are having all of our nieces and nephews in our wedding, but we don't know what to call them (for the program and if they want to be announced at the reception). Our daughter is the ring bearer, and we would like her to be the only one with that title because she will actually be carrying the rings and bringing them up to us during the ceremony. Is their another title that we could give the boys? The girls could all be flower girls but the suggestions I've seen for boys are Jr. Groomsman, or pages. I think they are young enough to not be offended by "Jr." but is that still weird? Any other ideas?

Re: Kids Roles

  • Either don't give them titles at all, or call them flower girls, ring bearers, bridesmaids, or groomsmen.  Don't try to come up with cutesy descriptions.

No cutesy names, just wondering if there was anything other real title that I was missing (for instance page, which I had never heard of until I was googling this question). But from what I understand that is someone who holds the train. Calling them ring bearers felt cutesy to me too since they aren't actually doing that.

  • To be honest, I think coming up with roles for kids other than ring bearer, flower girl, bridesmaid, or groomsman is "cutesy."

Don't get me wrong, it definitely is completely acceptable to ask them to participate, assuming they and their parents are okay with it, and they can get themselves up and down the aisle by themselves and understand enough of what is going on that they can control themselves and behave properly.  But if they're not going to participate in one of the above-listed roles, then I don't think it makes sense to have them in the wedding party at all.  Just take pictures with them and let it go at that.  But don't try to come up with a definition of the role.
  • Page boys isn't made up.
A ring bearer is a specific type of page boy.
A page boy is the male equivalent to a flower girl.
(Page boy predates the whole ring bearer thing)

Why on Earth do they need listed in the program?  They're simply guests, it sounds like...  Don't try to fancy it up.

I thought a page boy carried the train? If page boy is the male equivalent of flower girl than I guess that is what they are doing.

They are walking down the aisle, not carrying anything, with the girls in each of their families. (So one sisters three kids, then other sisters 2, then last sisters 3).

And I am definitely not trying to make up roles for them. My question was if there were any other (real) roles that children usually do, since I did not think page boys would fit.

We're not just having them there as guests, they've already been asked and outfits have already been purchased. They want to be in, their parents want them in it, we want them in it, I don't really see a problem. If there's not a title for them we'll just call them bridesmaids/groomsman or attendants or something.

In some weddings yes they do carry the train (traditionally) however in modern times this has become less common (also depends on the dress and things) and they just walk with flower girls/small bm (royal weddings (from most European countries) can give you photos of what both look like)
  • I listed mine as "Flower Kids".  Because all of them were either holding a small bouquet, or wearing a flower.  The little guys sort of "escorted" the flower girls down the aisle.    In rehearsal, they were all somewhat seperated, with space in between them, sort of like how a Bridesmaid/Groomsman proceeds down the aisle, but in real life, they all stuck together like glue and ended up walking down the aisle like this:

I laughed out loud at your picture. That is SO adorable.

Also, you're a genius. FI and I have ten nieces/nephews that we abdolutely adore and we want to include all of them in the ceremony. Flower Kids, it is!
