Wedding Woes

Re: the cursive convo the other day and young people

My work boyfriend is a 24 year old gay man.  I adore him and I'll be sad when he leaves (he's going off to law school in a month).  He's one of the few people that I've bonded with at work and feel like I can be my flaming liberal ally self with.

Anyway, he was watching me write out a notary yesterday and amazed at how fast I was writing.  I looked at him and said, "It's cursive.  That's the point, you never pick up your pen".  He said the only grade he was forced to write in cursive was the 2nd, after that every assignment had to be typed.  He showed me his cursive signature and it was all cramped and horrible looking (he even commented he couldn't remember how to make the cursive capital G) and took him a good 10 seconds to sign his full name.

Then he almost fainted b/c I made a comment that I had 15 years past school on him and that was probably the difference.  He stopped all flabbergasted and asked how old I was.  I said 36.  He said he had thought I was only 28 and made me get out my license.  Then he said, "YOU WERE BORN IN THE 70s!!!"  I said, "Son, it's not like I remember the 70s, you know.  I was a toddler".

  • My work bff is a 24 year old gay man, too, and he is also behind allowing cursive to fall into obscurity.  Kids these days!

  • My print writing is actually quicker than my cursive. I think I stopped in about 2nd or 3rd grade as well. I chalk my writing up to being left handed- they don't really do anything to help left handed kids figure it out (other than "just reverse what I do!") so you figure out your own way.

  • i may or may not have recently given an angry lecture to several 20yos regarding the difference between a cursive g and a calligraphy g. there were d'nealian citations.

  • I cut left handed people a lot of slack.  I can print with my left hand, but the convolutions required to do it (b/c I'm so used to right handed styles) is ridiculous.  I can't imagine what it must be like all the time.

I can print pretty quickly, but it's actually this kind of bastard print/cursive baby.  I still rarely pick up my pen, so the letters are still quite connected.

I do my own hybrid that is pseudo legible.  I'm the only one in my family that can do pseudo legible.  DH and I can't even share a shopping list it's that bad.

I'm having trouble with the realization that I'm middle aged.

  • DH is 31 and can barely read cursive, let alone write it.  But he's got the Russian alphabet down, go figure.

  • I love cursive, still.  I write in a hybrid as well, half cursive and half printed.  It's weird but I don't care.  I live dangerously like that.
  • @6fsn, I wasn't really bothered by it until this last birthday.  Something about 36 is killing me inside.  I just can't wrap my head around being 40 soon.  Maybe it's b/c I don't have kids, but I still don't really feel like an Adult.
  • Have kid, do not feel like an adult.

I heard a commercial for some weight loss thing talking about hormones changing as you age.  They recommended it for women 40 and over and I just thought "damn, that's only 2 years away."
  • PMeg, IDK if I feel better or worse then.  :)

IDK, I think I might be firmly ensconced in a midlife crisis.  Aren't I technically too young for that?

Anyway, I started Jillian Michaels' 6 Weeks to 6 Pack Abs. I don't expect to have a 6 pack, but less jiggle would be nice.  This is one area I can at least exercise some control over in this aging process.

And no lie, I enjoyed being told someone thought I was 28, even if he's 24 and doesn't really know what 30s looks like.

  • Yes, I think you're a little young for that.  Life expectancy is over 72 these days.

  • Well, I can't still be stuck in my quarter life crisis.  WHERE DO I FIT IN?!?!  *sobbing*

  • I was told a few weeks ago that I haven't aged a day, and this person last saw me 2003.  I was flattered for sure.

I'm more than half way to 72 and my clan dies young.  Hello, midlife.

I'm having a twitch because HMo mentioned  d'nealian and I happen to think it's the devil incarnated into a system of writing.

(and I do a scrwy hybrid most of the time)

That said, I have had to explain cursive capital Fs repeated.  People have insisted that my signs that I make with these are 'confusing'.  WTF, this is an F people!image

I gave up on the cursive Q a few years ago.  I had several professors question if I had spelled a word correctly.  I was not pleased.

I always hate the cursive Q because my brain wants to make it into a 2--and I don't switch well between #'s and letters.  I KNOW it's a Q, but my brain defaults to "it's a 2!  wait 2uiet doesn't make sense.  Oh.  Quiet.  Got it".

So I replaced it with the print years ago.

    But that's my issue--and I also have issues with B's and P's (both capital and lower case).  If I just write a B on a paper there's a 10-20% chance that I write a P instead.If I write a P on a paper, same thing--10-20% chance my hand creates a B.
