The "Sombero Look"

This has been bothering me since February when I had my makeup and hair trial. At the time my root were long while the rest of my hair was highlighted. So as the hair chick started doing my hair, she asked if I was going for the "sombrero look." I kinda laughed because my roots were really long and I didn't really get it. But the more I thought about it the angrier I got.

That really is as racist as it sounds? Right?

I tried to ignore it because it's not a huge deal in the whole of things, but it has bothered me more and more and seriously irks me. Anyway, I finally emailed the owner and requested someone else. She hasn't responded yet but I already feel better.

Re: The "Sombero Look"

  • I don't really get it, so I can't really say if it's racist or not.
  • I didn't either until I started picturing a Mexican working in the fields, wearing a sombrero (WTF?). So the lower portion of the hair is lighter than the crown.

Unless someone has heard this expression and knows this means something different.

  •  I have 2 Mexican kids- so I'm Mexican by injection?

It doesn't strike me as racist- I think she was thinking of a hat that is 2 toned.

I actually haven't seen many 2 toned sombreros- but I can picture from her description the portion of roots to dyed on your hair.

I hope you didn't email her boss that she is racist- that seems like a huge jump to me.

  • Are you sure she didn't say Ombre?
  • edited July 2013
Yep, she had just started on my hair (it's a mobile hair/makeup place so it was in the owner's home, not a busy salon) and she was 3 inches from my head.

And there was a pretty discernible line between my brunette roots and my highlights. Definitely wasn't ombre.

ETA: I only said I wanted someone else. I'll explain it if she asks why, but the owner was doing my makeup when she said it so it won't get blown out of proportion.

  •  Yes Pele, I did :)
  • Just because I was curious I googled it.  Apparently there actually is a trend of hair color called the Sombrero method...who knew?

The more I look into it, it seems its an effect of getting the ends to be lighter than the top portions so it could make sense, I hope you didn't get the girl in trouble : /

You mean ombre...its when your hair is darker than fades out lighter, I have it.

Live fast, die young. Bad Girls do it well. Suki Zuki.

  • What? I didn't get anyone in trouble. I already said that. It was really condescending the way she said it (I know that wasn't in the OP), and she said "Well, are you going for the sombrero look?" I awkwardly laughed and said that I have been meaning to get my roots done. That was it. I want someone else to do my hair. Not a big fucking deal. I would still like to figure out what she meant though. I guess I could just ask...

She did not say ombre. Ombre is a different word than sombrero.

And according to google, my hair looked absolutely nothing like the sombrero color technique used Aldo Coppola. Again, different things. That technique does not give you basically a straight line separating long ass brunette roots and heavily highlighted hair, which is what my hair looked like.

Seriously, I think you're making something out of absolutely nothing.  Like if a stylist asked if I was going for the "bangs look" and I thought, "I CLEARLY have well defined layers!  Not Bangs!"

If you aren't comfortable, then yes, just use someone else.  I just think you are looking WAY too far into this one

Good. I hope so. I totally ignored it at the time. Then that image popped into my head (I live in a border town) and I was pissed I didn't say something.

I know I didn't get her in trouble because I emailed the owner like 2 hours ago asking an unrelated question and saying I wanted someone other than who did my trial (I didn't say why). I will apologize for asking TK if she was racist if that lessens your outrage.

What the eff does "Mexican by injection" mean? Why would you say something so ignorant? I'm sure you know what being Mexican is or isn't. Since you have two Mexican kids you obviously don't have a problem with Mexicans but I find what you said to be rather ignorant. Oh and I'm half Mexican.

She was making a funny. I enjoyed it.

OP, asking an owner for someone else essentially tells the owner there was something you did not like about the person who did the trial. It's like giving the gal that did the trial a bad review. So indirectly, yes, it can negatively impact her career.
Now... if you didn't like her attitude and thought she was snotty about your hair (or that she thought a certain look was called something it wasn't), then sure. Totally justified in asking for a different person.
But you came on the thread talking about racism and I know I inferred at first that you didn't want to use her because you thought she was racist. So I think people's concern is that you got her in trouble because you thought she was being racist even though she wasn't. That's unfair to her.
If you just didn't like her work or her 'tude, then no harm, no foul. But then why bring up the racism thing at all?

Dude, she was making a joke, calm yourself. I'm also half Mexican and didn't find it offensive at all.

Calm down.  She was making a joke about having sex with her Mexican FI/SO/father of her children. Clearly you missed the humor.
  • I don't take it as racist, but if she did actually say sombrero look, I don't know if I'd want her doing my hair either...it kinda sounds like a dig

Field workers - in California at least - don't typically wear sombreros while working.

I have an obre at the moment :)

I have also never heard of this sombrero technique, I also just googled it and the only thing that had to do with hair was the ombre.

She obviously thought you were "cool" enough or in the know of new styles to know the term and thats why she asked you.

This poor girl is probably getting into some hot water with her job because of you. I'd do something to fix it.
