Warranty on Ring

My boyfriend and I are currently living together and recently went to look at rings. I'm wodnering if he should pay for the warranty program on our rings. My sister got married 2 years ago and made her husband go back to the jewler and cancel the warranty program that he bought (total bridezilla!) saying that they were a scam. However, I have also heard that they are very helpful sometimes and a good investment. Can anyone prove some feedback for me?

Re: Warranty on Ring

  • What does the warranty cover?

Good jewelers will extend a warranty on their products without asking you to pay extra.  For example, the place where we will buy my pave wedding band includes a warranty at no extra charge if one of the small stones falls out, etc.

Also, other elements may be covered by insurance which you should buy separately to cover things like theft or total loss of the ring.  My insurance policy is all peril, so that includes replacement if it is lost or stolen and repair if it is damaged.  So if you end up buying a separate insurance policy, the warranty may be pointless anyway.
  • Yea I don't know any information about a warranty, but we do have insurance that covers loss, theft, damage (loss of stone or whatnot). It's through our renters insurance provider and relatively cheap with good coverage. I'd recommend looking into that.
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton
  • You need to do your research and find out what option is best for you.

If you add your ring to your renter's or homeowner's, be sure to carefully investigate just what is/is not covered or if there is a dollar cap to your coverage. Some policies won't cover loss, only theft or damage incurred in a fire or similar. Not damage from every day wear and tear.

You can go with a jewelry-specific policy. I've heard good things about jeweler's mutual. More coverage, but also more expensive and a recurring cost.

I personally have a good policy as part of my homeowner's. We also purchased an extended service plan from the jeweler. It was maybe $300-$400 at time of purchase of my e-ring, but all my other jewelry purchased at same place is also covered at no extra cost. In nearly 4 years, I've had service on prongs for loose stones a couple times and also re-dipping a couple times. It's never taken more than 2 days, more often same day service. And it's never cost me a penny in service, labor, or materials. It's been well worth the cost IMO. I do have to go in every 6 months for an inspection and cleaning, but I think that's just good care of your ring(s) regardless.
