Jamaican Resorts

We were thinking of a Jamaican Resort for our HM... Has anyone been? Any good places to recommend? Any holy-crap-don't-go-here's?

Re: Jamaican Resorts

  • FI and I went to RIU Ocho Rios about 5 years ago.  It was about an hour or so from Sangster Airport in Montego Bay.  The resort was beautiful and very clean, and is located right next to Jewel Dunn's River Resort (it was a Sandals when we were there).

We had an issue with our check-in (the room wasn't ready for HOURS after we arrived), but we were compensated with upgraded dining options.  The resort was very family friendly, but I don't remember seeing many children around.

We stayed on the property almost the entire time, but went on an excursion which included snorkling, climbing Dunns River Falls, and lots of rum punch.  We had a really great time, and will would like to stay at another RIU resort for our HM.

  • I have been to Couples Sans Souci and Couples Tower Isle. Both resorts are nice, but I agree with @CMGr. It's not my favorite island and if you are open to other options, I do recommend looking at some of the other islands. However, if you have your heart set on Jamaica, then I do recommend checking out Couples to see if it fits your needs.

Why Jamaica?  It is my least favorite Caribbean island.  It has some nice resorts, but once you step outside the resort, you will be bombarded with native con-artists and beggars.  I felt uncomfortable and unsafe there.
I recommend Puerto Rico, St. Maartin, Grand Caymen, St. Thomas/St. John, Mexico - or of you want to swim a lot, Aruba.
@CMGr That is quite a broad generalization, wouldn't you say?

TBH, more ignorant assholes approach me at JFK airport looking for a handout -- than in Jamaica.

OP, If you choose to go off resort property, you will likely be approached by vendors trying to sell you something.  If you are not interested, a simple "no thank you" goes a long way.  I have traveled along the coastline (where most of the resorts are located) and into the inland villages (what I call the "real Jamaica.")  I have been approached for money one time.  ONE time.  A local ran out of gas and was stuck on the side of the road.  His child ran up to our car and asked us for $1.  Whether the car was really out of gas, who knows??  Otherwise, the trips I have taken into the villages have been nothing short of amazing.  The locals are always friendly and hospitable towards my H and I and we have always been treated with respect.  That is one of the many  things we love most about that country!!

We only stay at Couples Resorts.  They have a "no tipping" policy, which is fantastic because IMO all guests receive the same phenomenal service.  However, we like to bring non-monetary goods with us to give to staff..  School supplies are a big hit down there, as it is very expensive to purchase in Jamaica.  The food (and alcohol) is top notch at Couples and the accomodations are simply fantastic.

This.  I don't agree with that generalization of Jamaica either.  We have gone into the villages inland as well and the people were nothing but friendly and welcoming. The craft markets can be a little intense but a firm "No thank you" is all it takes.

We stay at the Couples resorts as well.  The food is fantastic and the staff is the best.

  • We went on our HM in Jamaica and LOVED it. We stayed at Secrets Wild Orchid and it was amazing. We left the resort once on a day trip and never once felt unsafe.

As someone who has been in Sudan, Egypt, Kenya, Rome and London (four times) in the past two years, I can say I never once felt uneasy or safe in Jamaica compared to other places I've been. You can have problems anywhere you go. You just have to be aware of your surroundings and be mindful of other people.

I wouldn't let someone else's negative opinion on Jamaica cause you to change your outlook on it. It was fine and I have had more people pester me in Mexico than Montego Bay.

Many years ago we stayed at a Wyndham property in Rose Hall.  It was nice enough but I think it's under new ownership.  We did go to Rick's in Negril one day & climbed Dunn's River falls another day.  (bring your own water shoes or they will make you rent them -- gross).
  • We went to Sandals Royal Caribbean for our HM and had the best time. It is 10 minutes from the airport. We went off property twice and I never felt unsafe. Yes, you have vendors coming up to you trying to sell you things, but I never got asked for money.

We stayed at the Iberostar Grand in Rose Hall for our first anniversary and loved it.  No peddlers on the beach, good food, clean beach with plenty of seating, plenty of activities if you like to keep busy.
  • We are booked at Couples Sans Souci in September. I can't wait!
