Dress suggestions?

Hi everyone!

I am really struggling to find a dress that I love. We're getting married in August.  It is not my first wedding, but I stil want to feel like a bride.  We're having a fairly casual (though not completely informal) afternoon picnic wedding at a lovely indoor picnic pavillion built in the 1930s.  Gorgeous location. Ceremony and reception will both be in the same location, though we'll probably have the ceremony outside.

I just cannot find a dress!  It seems that everything designed for plus sized women is either way to formal.  Since I know we've all looked at a million dresses and every website known to man in the search for the perfect dress, I thought you lovely ladies might be able to help.

So here is what I'm looking for:

Length: Since I"ll be walking in the grass, I'd like it to be at the very longest ankle length and I'm leaning more toward knee-length or tea length.

Neckline: I have no boobs. Well, I mean, I have boobs, but they're disproporationate to my body.  I'm a large B cup/small C cup.  So sweetheart necklines and low v-necks do nothing flattering.  Also, lots of dresses made for plus women tend to be made to accomodate large breasts and end up fitting very strangely. I also have very broad shoulders.  So bateau, halter, and off the shoulder dresses make me look like a line backer.

Silouette/Skirt:  Ball gowns and cupcake/princess skirts are definitely too formal. I have a very boxy figure, so sheaths, mermaids and fit and flares tend to make me look like I have no shape to me at all.

Sleeves:  I'm not overly concerned about having sleeves or not. I have decently toned arms and could always throw a small cardigan on with it if I am feeling self-conscious.

Style: I tend to lean toward simplicity over ornate, vintage/retro over modern.

Thoughts? Ideas?  Direction?

Do you know anyone that can sew...i had some of the same issues with the dresses looking too formal... my mom is going to make mine and be able to customize it
  • Since you are going semi formal to casual, maybe select a tea length cocktail dress. You can try maybe jcpennys, target, layne bryant, or catos. A lot, not all, of the dresses in salons are going to be formal. Semi formal ones are out there but clearly as you can see hard to find. If you find yourself a cocktail dress that is fairly plain, you can dress it up with your shoes, headpiece, jewelry, etc. You don't have to go to a bridal salon since your wedding is a little more low key and that opens a few more options up for you. With the right accessories, you can still feel like a bride.

  • Thank you so much for your suggestions, ladies.  I always forget that i can look outside of the standard "bridal gowns".  Now I am going to start searching cocktail, evening, and bridal party dresses!

  • I was also going to suggest igigi, but someone beat me too it. LOL

But since your leaning to sort of a casual affair you might also consider http://www.holyclothing.com Their dresses come in various colors including white and I know a lot of women use them for wedding dresses. They post pictures of the wedding on their facebook page.
