do bridesmaids and groomsmaids wear the same dress??

i have 2 bridesmaids and 3 bridesmen, and he has 3 groomsmaids. i think it would be easier to just get all the girls the same dresses, like the guys are all havin the same suits. its not very formal, were havin a handfastin out in the woods with an indoor reception, and its around 100 ppl. would you have them wear the same or mix it up??

Technically speaking, your FI should choose the attire for his own attendants (male or female) and vice versa.

It doesn't matter in the slightest if the dresses match or not.

  • We asked our groomsmaid what she wanted to wear. She opted for a tan skirt suit to match my husband.

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Since your FI probably doesn't want to scour the internet for hours picking out dresses, I would get together with your girls and pick a dress, then see if your FI likes them then he can ask his girls. If they don't like it then they will already have an idea of what you 2 are looking for and then they can pick their dresses.

Totally doesn't matter if they match but it may be simpler and less stressful this way.

  • They don't have to match. FI is going to tell his groomswoman that she can either wear a bridesmaids dress, or a knee length black dress.

  • I've seen a few pictures where the groomsmaids wore a dress in the same color as the guys tuxes or suits. You could add a belt in a color that matches their ties. Don't force the groomsmaids into a skirt suit just so they wear a suit - but if that's what they're comfortable wearing, go for it. Do whatever you want.

  • I'd go one of 2 ways:

    1. Invite all the girls in the WP to shop together for the same dress (or same color dress if you don't want matching).
    2. Have the groomswomen wear black to match the tuxes (or whatever color the tuxes are).

FI can ask them what they prefer.

We were originally told we could wear a tux like the guys, the bridesmaid dress in navy like the girls, or the bridesmaid dress in black like the tuxes.  But really, the groom didn't care at all.  And the bride loved what we ended up choosing.
That's a great idea! I know I wouldn't want to have to wear a tux to a wedding, but some ladies might want to match the rest of the groom's side. Having a choice is the perfect solution.
  • @fyrefly76, how does a dress look like a tux? It is just the same colors?
  • I don't think they have to match.  You might ask your FI if he has any preferences, but if not, you can invite his groomsmaids to join you in dress selections if you want.
  • Maybe if you have more than one color in your scheme you can have the girls side wear one and the guys side the other. My bm's are wearing cocoa and my daughter (Maiden of Honor) is wearing Guava so one side can wear cocoa and the other the guava for example. : )
  • We have one groomswoman who will be wearing the same dress as the bridesmaids, but in black.  She is going to have a wrist corsage instead of a bouquet as well.
