Need advice: Table Names?

Ok, so some background.  I'm a geologist and our wedding colors are Purple and Green.  We have amethyst crystal spears that will be coming out of the cake and the guest favors are purple and green rock candy.  I came up with the idea to have table names of purple and green gemstones/minerals.

I was careful to choose minerals that most people could pronounce.  My mom suggested that since most people won't understand the concept of the table names (For example, how would anybody know that Zoisite, Malachite, and Lepidolite are purple and green minerals?), that I should instead change them to well-known gemstones like Diamond, Ruby, Pearl, etc.  I understand this, but I'm a bit bothered by it, because I feel like it loses its continuity.  What's the point of naming the tables just gemstones?  The point was that they were Purple and Green gemstones...

So FI suggested that I keep my original table names, but add a little fun fact sheet about each one.  It would allow people to understand the concept, and it might even be a conversation starter.  Excellent idea.  Except, that's kind of a lot of work.  Is it worth it?  Do you think I should do this? Or just scrap the table name idea all together?

Re: Need advice: Table Names?

  • I don't see an issue with using gem stones that aren't purple or green, so I guess I agree with your mom.  It's not like you'll have photos of them, so it's not like they will actually clash with your colors.  If you want to keep the current table names, I like that idea of adding a little paragraph about them.  In order to cut down on the work involved, you could just copy and paste entries from Wikipedia. ;)

Honestly, I'd go with your mom's idea... Even if you added the fun facts at each table, I personally wouldn't probably visit any other tables and put together that each table was a purple or green gem.

Whereas with your mom's idea, I'd instantly get that each table was a gem- I'd be more impressed with it fitting into your geology theme than thinking they should all be purple or green stones.

I think the whole geology thing is an awesome idea, by the way :)

  • I agree with your mom, you should use common gems that most people know. I am sure this bothers you because it is your profession and makes perfect sense to you, but since most of your guests probably won't it may just confuse them. I know I would be! But the continuity of the theme is still perfect, I would think it's awesome!
