One big cake or individual cakes?

Has anybody ever seen or had mini wedding cakes at each guest table? The cake would be enough for how ever many is seated at the tables and the cakes are the centerpieces. My cake lady had suggested this. I'm having more of an intimate wedding/reception. We'll be going to Johnny's Steakhouse for a plated dinner after the ceremony. I have 3 flavors so the flavors would be rotated.

We are doing cupcakes, with them being part of the centerpieces on each table.

I read an article where a couple did this. They had a different flavor at each table so guests could go around and try different cakes. I thought it was neat.
