Dress: shoulder ideas. Please help?

I'm trying to find an alternative to a wrap, mainly because I have sort of broad shoulders and would like to make them look smaller.

Could I do beaded cap sleeves or would that detract from the dress style? like so- Beaded cap sleeves
or should I try sleeves made of the Chantilly lace like my dress like here: Lace cap sleevesor more of a fluttery lace
or if I used trim similar to this and had 2-3 that were connected side by side off the shoulders? or just use tulle.
How about a lace cap sleeve bolero like on this dress, just in Chantilly lace.  My dress dips like this in the back so it might work.
OR.. last one..   something like this: its the perfect colors and I like the neckline.
I love sheer illusion necklines too, but would it take away from the dress to much?

Any advice would be appreciated.  as you can see I'm rather overwhelmed with ideas...

thank you!!

  • I like the tulle or the basic lace cap sleeves.

The fluttery cap sleeves will just emphasize your broad shoulders and the beaded ones would be weird since your dress doesn't have any beading whatsoever.

Honestly, coming from someone with broad shoulders, the more you try and hide them or make them look smaller the more noticeable they are.  I think you should just embrace your shoulders because I really doubt they look all that broad when you are in the dress.

  • Hi there!

Your gown is beautiful! I feel you on the broad shoulders. I stressed (and still ocassionally do stress) about the strapless neckline of my gown. In general, v necklines (or sweetheart - like your dress) are the best way to go. Avoiding horizontal lines also helps not draw attention to your shoulders (like the JLM dress). So cap sleeves tend to not be the best option - especially heavily beaded sleeves. I, personally, am not a fan of the tulle strap look AT ALL unless it's an illusion neckline.

Honestly, your dress is stunning so I'd be tempted to leave it alone. But if you're still concerned, why don't you take it to a good seamstress? She should be able to show you a few mock ups of straps you could add. That way you can get a feel for what things will look like on you, not on a model.

But again - I'd leave it alone. It's stunning. I'd be worried about taking away from the character of the dress. Don't hide yourself or your body on your wedding day!

  • Not going to lie, I love that dress the way it is. The lines are so simple and elegant. If anything, I would do a very simple tulle strap, but the dress is very beautiful as is, and I am 100% sure you do not look broad-shouldered in it!

    I totally agree with Maggie!

Don't care for #1 -- kind of busy.
LOVE #2 -- simple, lace, goes with the dress, shows off the shoulders.
Really don't care for #3 -- looks like something you might look back on in twenty years and ask, what was I thinking?!
    #4 is just ok.
LOVE #5 -- another simple, elegant suggestion.
    #6 is too much.
#7 is really beautiful, but I would be holding my breath until I could try it on in person.
