Hawaii

We have decided to honeymoon in Hawaii so I am looking for recommendations on everything -- where to stay, what to do, where to eat, anything else we should know. Budget is $5k plus food.  We like the beach, hole in the walls, history, everything really.  Going March 31st for a week to 10 days.

Thank you!

Re: Hawaii

  • We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon in January. We spent 5 days in Maui, stating at the Westin Maui and LOVED it. There are quite a few great restaurants on the property and 5 pools and a awesome spa. We could have easily spent an entire week plus there. Definitely rent a car. There are so many great places to eat and see. Our favorite breakfast place was the Gazebo in Napili. We ate there 3 mornings. It was a quick drive from the hotel and SO delicious.

Then we spent our last 2 days in Honolulu and stayed at the Moana Surfride. The hotel was so gorgeous, but the pool was small and being right on Waikiki, it was SOOO overly crowded. But we did really enjoy our day on the North Shore, exploring and stopping at the Dole Pineapple facility and our morning at Pearl Harbor.
  • Thanks manjermj!

Liatrist2010, yes it includes airfare from Orlando.

We heard Honolulu is the crowded one and wondered if we stayed on another island how hard is it to get over there for the day?  Are there water shuttles and such?
  • FI and I just started looking into Hawaii as a possible HM location.  Friends of ours suggested looking into Costco's Travel Dept, and they have some pretty great deals for Hawaii with airfare, hotel, rental car, and resort credit (some with free room upgrades).  We were pleasantly surprised to see how reasonable their packages were.

Ah Costco. They do have some awesome packages with unheard of prices, but you have to get the pre-packed deals to get the absolute best price. They are also useless when it comes to giving out specific information about a destination, as their "agents" are not specialists. They just plug numbers into a system and it spits out a package and price. Again, if you really like one of their pre-packaged non custom trips, then you are getting a really good deal.

That being said, check out gohawaii.com. All the info you ever needed, plus a search to find a Hawaii specialist if you really want to get a a good value and good advice. I have been to the islands a few times and really love Kauai, but Oahu is probably the easiest to find within budget. Kauai would be the second best.

My FI and I booked our Hawaii honeymoon online through Costco.  We did our own research ahead of time to decide what islands we wanted to visit, so we weren't really looking for advice from Costco's travel dept.  We're going to Oahu and Maui and we had resort choices and room choices on both islands through Costco.

So far for us it's worked out great and the price was unbeatable.  You can pick activities in advance if you know you want to do something in particular, which we did for a few things since the price was the best we could find.

We're going on our honeymoon in a couple weeks so I can let you know how it all worked out better afterwards.
  • The only way to get between islands is via plane, except on a cruise, or you can take a boat from Maui to Lanai or Molokai. The flights are short, but they are usually about $100 each way-they can really eat into your budget.

We went to Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island. On a budget, I would stay away from Maui-it is way more expensive than the other islands. Gas, food, hotels-everything has a higher price point. I also just did not understand what the big deal is about Maui, I didn't like it at all. We stayed at the Westin and I thought it was overpriced, over developed, and the service was poor (for the price you paid). The spa however-AMAZING.

Kauai is more laid back, it is absolutely gorgeous, and we found that we got more for our money (ie free upgrade on the rental car, better service at restaurants, etc). I loved the Big Island, but we are a more adventurous couple, so hiking two hours to a secluded beach, jumping off cliffs, etc is more our style.

And definitely get the Hawaii Revealed books and follow his advice on beaches & activities. He was hit and miss with restaurant recommendations (Yelp was a better source) but he was spot on about all the other recommendations.

  • Thank you everyone!
  • Look into a travel agent - ours got us a great deal on airfare and hotels. Look into getting a condo or staying at a hotel that has a small kitchen in the room. Food is expensive, so we're hoping to save a good bit by making most of our meals ourselves and packing lunches. We're doing Maui and the Big Island. The must-dos for us are a zip line, luau and waterfall tour. We're also hiking to the black and red sand beaches on Maui. On the Big Island, we're checking out the volcanoes!
  • We are going to Big Island next May and are making sure our place is close to costco. :) Volcanos, observatory, beaches. Its gonna be awesome.

if it's your first time and you wanna sight see, I say go Oahu, Waikiki beach area, then you can do tours, we did Ride the Ducks and like a pearl harbor tour it was awesome.
