Holy veil!

Hi all!
I recently had my first fitting and I was looking for my veil as well. The one I tried on was gorgeous (chapel/cathedral length, I'm not sure which one, I just know it's long). Then I looked at the price tag and almost fell over. My mom offered to buy it for me, I know she feels guilty about not being able to contribute too much financially. I understand, my fiancé and I always planned on paying for this wedding ourselves. My mom is divorced and is basically raising my nephew in addition. She ended up buying it, she was insisting. I just feel so guilty about it, I never intended on spending anywhere close to that on a veil.

How much did everyone else spend on a veil? I'm almost embarrassed to say how much it was, but I don't really have much of an idea on how much they usually run for.

Thanks for the input!

Re: Holy veil!

  • I spent $26.00 and ended up not wearing it.   I can't imagine spending more than 20-50 bucks on one.

You are only going to make yourself feel bad asking this question. Veils are expensive at salons, especially long ones. My FSIL spent $5,000 on her veil! The elbow-length one I tried on with my dress was $500, but I hope to spend more than $50.

If tit is non-returnable, there is no sense dwelling on it. What is done is done. It will only break your heart while not fixing anything.

I agree with this.  If you already bought it (which I admit I didn't notice when I first read your thread), then don't worry about it.  There are beautiful veils out there for in the 50 range.  But, you already have yours, so try not to worry about what you could have found one for.
  • I had my custom made for $50. I agree that there's not much sense in worrying about it now unless you're going to return it. If you do, PM me and I'll give you the details of mine. It's beautiful and she was great to work with.

  • Same thing happened to me.  My mom insisted on buying the veil from the shop for $250. It really is beautiful, but I knew I could have found it online much cheaper. I would never tell her that, though. She was excited to buy it for me and I'm happy with it, so I'm not focusing on the price. Like PP said, what's done is done.  Be happy and don't think about the price.

Veils are one of the biggest rip offs I have ever seen in wedding land. But if you love it, and it's paid for, just rock it.

I recently just made a practice cathedral length veil for myself. I bought 3 yards of shiny ivory tulle for about $3, a jeweled comb for $10, and thin lace trim for about $15. I think it looks pretty damn good. You don't really even need much sewing experience to make one. I used this guide.

It's bought and yours now. Don't feel guilty, instead cherish it as your mother wants you to. It's special not because of the amount of money it cost, but because it was a present from mother to daughter. Getting married is a rite of passage and I'm sure she feels glad and relieved she could be part of it by giving you the veil. Who knows, maybe this is the birth of an heirloom right there!
  • Mine was 150 for a fingertip length. The same veil cathedral length would've been 300. I was pretty picky about my veil (I wanted a lot of beading along the edges) and just couldn't find anything I liked at the cheaper places online, so I got it from the salon. It sounds like your mom really wanted to do this for you, so try not to feel too guilty.

    This.

I made myself a raw edge, single tier, fingertip veil for $8.  The tried on the same exact style in my bridal salon and it would have cost me $120.

Veils and all other wedding accessories are generally overpriced because the demand and "need" for those items from brides is high.  If you love the veil and your Mom already purchased it then wear it.  Get some great pictures of you in the veil and do one of those cutesy photos where the veil covers you and your FI.

  • Definitely don't fret about the cost now that it is purchased. I was similarly shocked when I found out how much the hairpiece I picked out cost, but my grandmother loves it and purchased it for me. It's more than I would have spent otherwise.

My fingertip veil has crystal beading along the edge. It was originally $280 and with a discount and a special they were having for a free veil up to $250 with dress purchase, I paid $22.50 for it.

  • Thanks everybody, it really is quite stunning and we both loved it. You're all right, my mom wanted to do something special for me (first daughter to get married) so I won't fret over it anymore. It may be higher than I intended, $350, but I'm gonna rock the hell out of it!

I did do a split second thought of making one myself, but I am not crafty at all. My nephew's macaroni art even looks better than mine!

    Thanks again everybody :)
  • I spent 150 before my 25% off coupon. I spent more on accessories than I thought (tiara too), but I have been way under budget so far. I know that the situation I am in I have a long time, but not much time for my schedule at all. The day is really special for us so we have to make it work. I need to make decisions early and then move on, I had a coupon, used it and now I will Rock the hell out of these accessories!!!
