How to choose a week or date in Sept?

Hey there,

We've been engaged for a few weeks, and have started discussing our date. We chose September partially because I didn't want a spring or summer wedding, and partially because, in terms of weather in Michigan, it seems to be a bit of a sweet spot--not as hot anymore, and not yet too chilly. I'd personally always envisioned either a winter wedding or something in October, but as he and his family are Middle Eastern (and, therefore, unable to happily deal with snow and late fall weather), I'm quite happy to do September--a warmer month--instead.

We won't be doing a "fall-themed" wedding; however, I think I'd prefer to see changing leaves instead of end-of-summer foliage, if possible. At the same time, I don't want to have our wedding on a day that's so cold that there was no point in trying to plan around the weather. I don't think we're going to be picky about it being on a weekend, weekday, or Sunday... whatever day we can get during a good week is what works best for us.

What week in September, besides the first, seems like it would fit us best? I'm thinking the 2nd, for the warmth, but the 3rd or 4th for the changing colors.

I tried Google, but couldn't find a website that gives weather averages by the week--only by the month. I feel that we need something more specific at this point. Does anyone have any ideas? :)

Re: How to choose a week or date in Sept?

  • Hi There,

I am not from MI, or anywhere cold, from San Diego, but at this time we have only settled on 9/2014 not the specific date. We are picking our venue first and then looking at what their schedule is like.  Are you having an indoor wedding/reception or outdoors? You can always rent heaters for outside if the venue doesn't already have them if the day is a little cooler than expected. Also, figure out whats more important the weather or the changing of the seasons.  Its a celebration of love and its for 1 day, you can compromise on certain things, but if there's a season/theme you have always visioned... go for it!
  • Well, we're thinking September or very early October, because I personally HATE spring and summer weddings, and FI would turn into a FI-cicle if we did it in the winter, which is what I originally wanted. (He and his family are from the Mediterranean.) We want an indoor-outdoor sort of location, but are also looking at some fantastic indoor-only locations.

The tough part is waiting to set a date until we get a venue, which is what we're currently doing... mainly because we can't visit any venues till we fly to Michigan! I'm glad to see that this is a reasonable thing to do, and we're not alone in this practice.

    Thanks! :)
  • I'm getting married on the 21st, mostly because I was trying to avoid my parents' birthdays, which are in the first two weeks of September.  However I am also hoping it will be a little bit cooler by then. I think the 2nd and 3rd weeks of the month are the loveliest.  I'm not near MI, (Connecticut, actually) so I can't say for sure what would be the best time for your region.
