Budget Wedding Venue Suggestions?

Hello everyone,

I'm operating on an extremely tight wedding budget, and I would really appreciate any suggestions. My fiance is a recent college graduate, and I will be graduating in several months from now. We're both grappling with substantial student loans, and will be paying for the wedding ourselves. Therefore, we need to keep the entire wedding within a budget of between $6,000-$8,000 maximum, if at all possible. We're planning to get married next summer (2012). It has been my dream to have a wedding close to the ocean, but I've found it difficult to track down any reasonably priced venues. I also adore the Newport area, but I realize that most venues in Newport, itself, would be well outside of my price range.

We're looking at having a small wedding of approximately 50-65 guests. My fiance's family and friends will be flying/driving out from the midwest. Thus, we'd like to try, within our means, to have a destination-style wedding, as it will be a vacation for them (and most of them have never been to New England). I'm interested in knowing if anyone might know of a) any locations where we might be able to have a reasonably priced, outdoor wedding ceremony by the water and b) any affordable reception venue ideas. I have done some looking into the Quidnessett for a reception after it was recommended. The grounds are lovely, and they appear to be quite reasonably priced per-plate, however, I have been unable to tell if any spending minimums apply. Any additional information or recommendations would be very helpful.

Thanks so much!

Hello and welcome to the board. I suggest you check out Dewolf Tavern at Bristol Harbor Inn in Bristol, R.I. The venue has a private space perfect for weddings. It's right by the water too! I believe with your guest count, it can be done within your price range. As for outdoor ceremony space, definitely Colt state park in Bristol! They have a area reserved for outdoor weddings and for a small fee...I believe $15 you can have your wedding there. For additional savings, try a Friday or Sunday night or check for offseason discounts.

Below are some helpful links including a wedding reception at Dewolf Tavern and ceremony at Colt State Park.

^ Oh Bristol is close to Newport but if you have your heart set on Newport, try Atlantic Beach Club or the following venues at the Newport historical society.

Try the Easton Beach Rotunda for a really reasonable space.

I would warn you against Quidnessett if you're on a tight budget because their per plate minimum is $25 (though depending on the caterer at another location, this might be a steal). That said, they have a great view and their room to the left (not the giant red one) is really charming. Also, just so you're aware, they only offer the dinner menu for weddings (even if it's actually lunchtime during your wedding). I think the lowest priced item on the menu is $24... so you'll probably end up spending more than $25/pp.

I did the math on this for a bigger wedding and was a little surprised at the cost. But for your wedding, it might be spot on. Good luck!

I wish I knew of the colony house before I booked! I love the photos

Anyway to the OP:
I would try for a Sunday/Friday night to save on costs.

Also, have you considered having it at a restaurant that is on the water-- like the BoatHouse in Tiverton.
http://www.boathousetiverton.com/
my coworker planned her wedding there - you can even bring in your own ipod to play music through their sound system- and they will do the ceremony out on the dock. I know her budget was around the same as yours :)

For a 60 person wedding I actually think you could swing the Viking hotel.
Their basic package includes a 2 hr open bar, dinner, and a cake for 109.00 pp. At 60 people, plus tax-- this comes in under your budget.

I also second the ABC- I think they have a nice spot and REALLY great value there. I believe their packages are around $70 pp or even less. I can email you the most updated pricing I received from them about 6 months ago.

Also, I believe that people have had really great weddings at Crystal Lake. Its not the Newport venue you are looking for, but its on the water
http://www.crystallakegolfclub.com/

You may have to think outside the box on it a little.
You might want to find a less expensive caterer, do family style etc-- and splurge on your venue if you want water front.

There are tons of weddings at Colt State Park too! That's def. a budget friendly place.

Goodluck!

^ Yes, I almost forgot about the Boat House (need to add to venue list). I absolutely love the food there. The Colony House and the two other facilities are relatively reasonable for Newport and the spaces are beautiful. Unfortunately they are not usually on people's radar. Also, you have to bring in a caterer plus rentals of tables and chairs can add up. I also have another suggestion and that is Mount Hope Farm in Bristol. However, it is on the pricier side. As for my venue, 60 people is way too small for Easton Beach Rotunda And unless you get married in the off season or a Sunday, maybe Friday night, it can be pricey for 6-8 grand budget.

Definitely look into Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford - the room is beautiful and their prices are great. For 130 people I think my cost will be about 8,000...and that includes an open bar cocktail hour & more than enough food!!

North Beach Clubhouse in Narragansett. The rental is $1,000 with a 100 person max. I think Ann Anazo (sp?) had hers there. You can do a Knot search. Other places to possibly look into: Spain of Narr., Village Haven, South County Museum, The Bay Voyage. Also try less resort-ish, but still ocean towns, like E Providence, Cranston, Warwick, or close-by MA. Like the others have said, state parks are super cheap; they don't allow alcohol but you can't the be cost/prettiness ratio. I think girls have also gotten married at lighthouses and the lawn at Fort Adams.

Really analyze your budget and what it needs to include. Mine is $10k and even off season (April) it's really tricky making that number work (I have double the people though). Just keep an open mind - I'm sure you'll find a wonderful place!

You also might look into the Andrea Hotel in Misquamicut (Westerly). Right on the beach and can fit your size group. http://www.andreahotel.com/weddings.html

Or there's the Coast Guard House in Narragansett but I believe they have a 70 or 75 person minimum (at least a couple of years ago; could have changed.)

Thank you all so much for your suggestions! I'm looking into many of the options mentioned, and am waiting to hear back. I did get a reply from the Quidnessett, but their minimum food purchase for a Saturday evening is over $7,000, and about $5,000 on Fridays or Sundays. I would consider holding the wedding on a Sunday if needed, but we would really prefer to have the reception in the evening. So, unfortunately right now I don't believe that the Quidnessett will be a possibility (as our whole wedding budget is between 6-8 grand).

I'm running into similar problems with quite a few other places I've contacted. Though the per-plate pricing is quite reasonable, the minimum spending requirements are the issue. From what I can tell, the Atlantic Beach Club would be fabulous, and we would be probably be able to afford it based on the per person pricing that was mentioned. I did, though, find one review which stated that they have a $15,000 minimum for Saturdays and $10,000 for Fridays and Sundays. Does anyone know if that is accurate? i2012do, if you could send the information you received to me at christin.fowler@yahoo.com, I would really appreciate that!

Lastly, does anyone have any experience with the Crowne Plaza in Warwick? I've heard that they are reasonable with pricing and that they can accomodate a wedding of our size.

I toured Crowne Plaza 2 weeks ago. The pricing is ~$71 pp for food, hd, 1hr open bar, wine on tables, cake, some other cool stuff. There's a 21% service charge and 8% RI tax. However, it's not anywhere close to beaches (~45 min away). From the ocean (for pictures) it's about 10 minutes.

I believe The Andrea has a $6k in season minimum. Crystal Lake is $4k.

The Asprey Boat House is on the water in Warwick. It really is just a hall though. Not fancy or special.

Since you have a low budget and want to get married in peak season, you could consider having it somewhere a little more inland. Maybe still in a beach town, but not oceanfront.

Spain in Narragansett will fit into your budget. I was married there in June 2009. They only hold weddings on Saturday day (when the restaurant is closed) but the food and service are amazing.

Thanks so much again for the suggestions. I have sent out requests for more information from Spain, The Towers, and The Crowne Plaza, and am still waiting to hear back.

Has anyone had any experiences with weddings at Venice in Westerly, Meadowbrook Inn in Charlestown, or Galilee Beach Club in Narragansett? I'm still looking into everything at this point, but I have not been able to get in touch with Meadowbrook Inn and have had difficulty finding information/reviews about Galilee Beach Club or Venice.
• Hello!
I came across this blog as I search for a reasonable (<50 ppl for F&B) wedding ceremony and reception site for next fall. Our guest list is around the 130 mark. I have contacted Galilee Beach Club and Wannamoisett Country Club and just wanted to hear your feedback towards either one. My fiance are very casual people and we're not looking for anything over the top, except for some good food and good time. I am open to any and all suggestions in the MA, RI and NH area.
Thanks!

Sarah,

I am really curious how you ended up doing this? I hae a very similar budget and a similar guest count and am just beginning the process.

Any advice on how to cut costs would be amazing. I plan to DIY centerpieces, invitiations and the wedding cake and I have a fantastic seamstress who will make my dress for $200, and a family friend who is a professional photographer! But I am still worried about the cost of food, alcohol, music, flowers etc.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks!

• Sarah - did you have any luck staying within your budget in or around Newport? If so? How?
• I was at a wedding at the Rookwood Inn in Lenoxville, MA, the guests stayed at the inn, and they had the run of the place. The lady that runs the place is also a JP. Maybe something to think about if you're wanting it to feel like a destination wedding
• Quidnessett Country Club on a weekday is $2500 minimum...and there is no site fee. Plates run $25.95 to $44.95 pp (they are a $1 cheaper during the week) Your deposit will go directly to the balance. Definitely worth checking out & you'll get the views of the Narragansett Bay
