Vintage Airplane/Airline Themed Reception

Hey guys, My fiancee is currently a pilot and we were hoping to do a vintage airplane/airline themed reception. We aren't getting married in a hangar or airport, just a normal hall. With that being said, I have no idea how to incorporate the theme. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Great idea! I'd order prints of older planes like this one and have them matted and framed to hang on the walls. Or better yet, spend a day with your FI at a vintage plane show (don't judge my terminology, I don't know the official name for them) and take the photos yourselves! You can name tables after models and, if done properly, incorporate paper airplanes. For example, if you want a backdrop behind the head table or the cake table, you could string a bunch of mini paper planes (created from craft store scrapbook paper with different prints) up. For escort cards, you could use tiny plane models and just put the names right on them.

You could also use the idea of travel and do things with suitcases, too :)

  • Cute! Incorporate vintage airline tickets into your stationary and paper goods. Also, vintage luggage for decor. I've seen vintage luggage used for card holders and advice "boxes". Makes me think of pearls and a birdcage veil for you (if you want of course!) Maybe light blues (sky!) and grays (planes). Pops of red would work well too. Vintage maps would be nice. If you can find an airplane punch you can have little airplanes on the tables.
  • I usually don't like themes but I find this adorable. There are invitations floating around (likely on Etsy) that look like plane tickets. You could make programs that look like those safety booklets with pictures of people going down those inflatable slides. Those little "wings" pins they used to give out - they could take the place of the men's boutonnières or you could turn those into escort cards.

This may be a little cheesy, but what if your bridesmaids tied colorful little silk scarves around their necks? And their BM dresses could have a little structure to them, too - maybe one of those work-appropriate navy tank dresses, kind of like the ones J.Crew tends to sell? You would, of course, need to provide the scarves and they should not be the BM gifts. I bet you could find some lovely ones at a vintage clothing store!

WHAT IF you had baskets of little peanut or pretzel bags waiting by the door? That would be cute.

Just don't let your guests smoke in the "cabin".

I don't like themes either...but I saw the title of this post and thought it was awesome.

Also try googling "Vintage travel theme wedding" for some auxillary ideas.

  • My fiance is likewise obsessed with aviation and works for a major airline (not a pilot though).  We plan to make our invitations look like boarding passes, and I'm hoping to make the table numbers plane numbers (like 737, 787, A380). I think my guest book will be a giant passport!  I'm just trying to make sure these are just little touches because I don't want to accidentally delve into "child's birthday" theme :)  I like all the other ideas so far!

Go with pretzels-Southwest doesn't do peanuts anymore because of allergies.
