WDWWT?

A new law in Mississippi requires authorities to collect cord blood if a girl under 16 refuses to name a father on the birth certificate.  The reason:  to reduce teen pregnancy/rape.

Re: WDWWT?

  • So what if the teenage girl wants to bank cord blood and there won't be a sufficient amount for this? Who is paying for this?

There is a whole host of legal issues. This is a genetic sample that is not being given voluntarily and violates the right of privacy of a minor and a legal guardian that is technically a minor.

When I worked (briefly) doing pediatric studies, we had quite substantial ethical and legal issues with collecting blood samples on girls to look at bone density while taking birth control. This is a controlled medical study folks- and the state of Mississippi thinks they can waltz in and collect infant cord blood. Hope they have the money for the court challenge.

Mississippi is the last place you want to look if you're trying to find respect for women and their bodies. It's disgusting even among my hometowners, and I come from one of the more progressive parts of MS.

  • I'm sure it wouldn't be cheaper to have sex education in schools and readily available BC, compared to the cost of collecting, storing, and testing cord blood :/

<sigh> That is so dumb. Usually when MS does stupid shit like this, it's a thinly-veiled anti-abortion thing. But this just doesn't make any sense. Yes, statutory rape is a crime, and yes, depending on the circumstances, it can be horrible. (Consensual sex between a 15yo and a 16yo is not the same as a 45yo raping a 13yo, imo.)

But what's the point? If they really had a suspect, they could swab the baby's cheek and the suspect's cheek (assuming they could get warrants for either) and get the same result, for hundreds of thousands of dollars less cost to the taxpayers.

Hmm... I wonder if someone's brother/uncle/whatever owns a DNA testing company that is going to win the state contract.

Assholes. I'm so glad I live in a blue state.

THIS!  Maybe the 15 year old girl doesn't want her 18 year old boyfriend going to jail?
