Opinions on Best Matte Foundation for retro 40's look?

I know that "best" is very subjective ... but am hoping for some suggestions on foundation brand so I didn't have to go purchasing and trialing a heap load :)  I want full coverage and a perfectly matte finish.  No shine or shimmer.  Ultimately aiming for a nice retro 40's look.  I have the lips and eyes down.  I just need to decide on primer (I don't normally use it) and foundation.

    I would try Make Up Forever Mat Velvet, and their matte primer.  I've had great experiences with their foundation and primer lasting and keeping that matte look.  You can find it at Sephora.  Perk with buying there is that if you're not happy with the product after one or two uses, you can bring it back.  Another option is Smashbox Studio Skin 15hr wear.  It's great at staying put, but in my opinion isn't as matte as Make Up Forever's.

    Nars has a great matte foundation... You can get a sample at Nordstrom or sephora!!
