Post Reception Party

We have the reception restaurant until 9:30PM.  I'm OK with calling it a night after 9:30PM, but my groom wants to do more.  My groom wants to have an after party.  He he suggested having people come over to our place for more drinking/partying.

We're on a tight budget and I don't want to have to supply more food and drink.  Also, I don't want to play "hostess" and make sure the house is clean, then clean up the day after.  Let alone have to deal with a guest that won't leave at the end of the night.

What have other couples done/gone for an "after party"?  What's a good compromise?

Thanks

Re: Post Reception Party

  • Does the restaurant where you're having the reception have a bar, or is there a bar near-by?  You can spread the word that you and husband will be heading over to the bar after the reception and that people are welcome to meet up with you over there if they'd like to.  If you don't turn it into an after-party that you're hosting (invitations, etc.) then people should understand that you're not footing the bill...

  • We're hitting up an Irish pub on the way back from the reception to the hotel. If people want to join us, great. Otherwise it'll be nice to have a final drink ending the night with my new husband. :)
  • Just do it by word of mouth that you are headed out for a nightcap @ xx bar. People will ask if they can come. Hopefully, they will buy you a drink for your wedding night.
  • I'd say word of mouth is the best way, i.e., "we're going to X bar afterwards and everyone is welcome to join us if they'd like".  Personally, the brides and grooms I've seen at after parties after evening receptions look completely exhausted.  I was exhausted and was very glad to go back to the hotel with my husband for our own time.
