Smashing surnames?

My SO's last name and my last name don't really play well together, so hyphenating is out. He's Caucasian and I have an anglicized first name, but I'd like to avoid any racial mix-ups if I'm introduced as Jane Doe if my name is something like Jane Wang.

This is going to sound crazy, but what if I put the all the letters in our last names and anagrammed them to make a whole new surname? Opinions? (Note: My SO is somewhat insistent on me taking his last name, but I'm not so sure...It's not meant to be insulting to his family, as I adore them, but I don't want to lose my heritage, either...)

Re: Smashing surnames?

  • I was thinking of doing that as well - I think it is a really cool idea and shows two people becoming one even in their last names.  I even came up with one smashing surname that sounded completely plausible.  But FI wasn't really for it.  He likes his last name as it is, and truth be told, I like my last name.  Now I'm just keeping my name but going by his unofficially.

  • We talk about this all the time!

I am Kerr. He is Sherborne. We are thinking Kerrborne haha! I keep my Kerr, he keeps his ..erborne. We are having a happy surprise baby (I am hoping for an indigo child, anyone know how I can improve my chances?) before we get married, so we would love to decide soon...

ps. Just kidding about the Indigo Child. Is there an opposite? Tangerine Child? I would like that please.
  • I got married a few months ago. My H took my last name. He also changed his first & middle to things he loved (a longtime nickname and a playful middle name). I loved my last name and had no intention of changing it. He could have done anything he wanted, but he liked the idea of us all having the same name, and my name is prettier! He checked with his parents to make sure they weren't horribly offended, but they're great. Now we're Dr. & Mr. Anssett. :-)
