dress shopping after weight loss surgery?

Hi all!  Three months ago I had weight loss surgery and have been losing weight rather quickly. Two weeks ago I got engaged!!  Place is booked and we will be getting married 10/5/12!  I have spoken to one local dress store and they say I should order my dress by March, which seems very early for me since I will probably continue to loss many months after that.  My question is for any other bride out there that has been in the same position.  How long did you wait to order (or even start looking) for your dress?  If you ordered early how did you handle dropping sizes?  If you do not feel comfortable with the open forum please feel free to email me : Dana.peter.wedding@gmail.com

Thanks!

  • if you found an answer to this question please let me know!  I am desperate I had wls in june and I am getting married in March, All the sites say I need to order my dress like now but I am due to lose about 50 more pounds.  AHHHH I'm so confused.  Wh
  • If you can I'd try to wait it out until this fall and go to David's Bridal since your dress will come in much faster. I'd also only get a corset back so it can be tighter and not need quite as many alterations.
  • My daugther had weight loss surgery a few years ago in February, planning her wedding for end of November.  We looked in June and found a dress that she purchased off the rack.  I believe it was a size 20, and it fit her like a glove.

Fast forward to first of November, and she had her first fitting.  She was drowning in the dress by this point having lost way over 100 lbs.  They were able to take it in; however, by the end of November, she had lost more weight and the dress was a little big at that point but it looked OK.  I would guess at that point, she was probably a size 14, and they were able to bring the dress down from a 20.

My advice would be to discuss your potential dress selection with an alterations person for advice on how many sizes it can be altered.  Some styles are more easily altered down than others.
