Non-synthetic Dress. Please help!!!

One of my bridesmaids has severe allergies to polyethylene (to the point where she has anaphylaxis, depending on the degree of exposure) and it is present in ALL synthetic fabrics (like polyester). Since polyester is used in nearly every satin, "silk", taffeta, chiffon, you name it, it's a nightmare trying to find a dress for her to wear.

Does anyone know where to find full 100% cotton or silk (including lining) dresses? I already have a color picked out from Alfred Angelo and all of the other girls have ordered their dresses, but at this point I'm just looking for something that she can wear and is blue. (Alfred Angelo color Indigo)

Re: Non-synthetic Dress. Please help!!!

  • J Crew has silk and cotton dresses at reasonable prices (at least in the sale section), but they aren't saying what the lining fiber is, so I'm assuming it's poly.

The best idea is to have one made by a local seamstress, and then that way you can be sure that all fabric, lining, underlining, and thread is silk or cotton.  The zipper would be tough, though.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you for your response, I was afraid of that. Oh well.
  • Where does she usually shop? Can you just give her a swatch and have her keep her eyes open for a dress in a similar shade? I feel as if she would have better luck looking for it than you, seeing she is used to dealing with this.

  • What about finding a cotton dress and dying it to your color?

  • She could always try and find a dress without a zipper or have one made.

Hope she's able to find one!

  • I don't have any advice that hasn't been given, but wanted to wish you luck in finding something that will work. What a horrible thing for her to have to live with.
  • Thank you everyone for your kind words. I think we've gotten it taken care of, I was lucky enough to find a pattern by simplicity that looks exactly like the dress style that we're going for (without breaking the bank, hello 40% off at Joann's). The expensive part will be the fabric and a bit of labor, but it'll probably come out costing the same as the other girl's dresses.

    Problem solved, I hope!
