What did you do with your dress?

I haven't decided what I want to do yet with my wedding gown. It's been sitting on my couch zipped up in the original bag. Do I preserve it in a box and let it sit in my attic until...I decide to play dress up? Do I put it on Craigslist, do I give it to Salvation army? What has everyone else done with their gowns?

Re: What did you do with your dress?

  • Mine is still sitting in my closet. Not cleaned yet. Let me know what you find. I just can't decide.
  • Mine is still in the bag on the bed in our spare bedroom

  • Depends, if it's an Allure 8923, you sell it to me. If not, I don't care. :)

  • Mine hung dirty for a year.  Finally I got around to getting it cleaned and preserved.  I considered trying to sell it or donate it but I am a sap and just could not part with it.

I also considered chopping the train off (covered in different sized crushed organza flowers) and put it in a shadow box to hang as some art in our house but thinking about taking a pair of scissors to my dress just makes me break out in anxious sweats.

As for what you should do with it is really a personal choice.  Some peope just do not see the point in keeping something they will never wear again.  Others just can't let it go (like me).

  • Mine is hanging up in our basement.  When the time comes, I'm going to have our children's christening gowns made from it.
  • Depends, if it's an Allure 8923, you sell it to me. If not, I don't care. :)
Bummer is Allure 8862 close enough? ;)
  • I am not married yet (but I am excitedly counting down the days lol) but I am planning on using part of the train for a baptismal dress for my daughter (we do not have kids yet but plan on adopting and trying for one of our own after the wedding) and / or donating it to my FI's father to use in his photography studio.
  • I typically have  hard time letting go of things, especially clothes. I originally wanted to preserve it and keep it for the "someday my child can use it for something", but what if I don't have kids? I also know that not everyone is rich, so it would be nice to sell it on the cheap to someone that can't afford a designer dress. Mine is a David's Bridal dress to answer shessocold =)

I'm just torn. I don't want to spend the money getting it cleaned, and I don't want to go through the hassle of selling it online... can you tell I'm just a little lazy? Ha

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one that has had mine sitting dirty for a while. I was starting to feel sad for it.

  • Every time I clean the living room, the dress just sits there on the futon... H asks me all the time "What are you going to do with this?? Just put it in a bag and bring it up to the attic." For some reason that just seems wrong. It needs to be sealed so no bugs get in!!!

I have mine in one of those jumbo vaccum bags!
  • I thought all the way up to the wedding that I would sell mine or donate it and then I turned all sentimental and couldn't bear to part with it. I've seen several ideas online including the baptism dress, a shadow box, pillow and even a Christmas tree skirt made from the skirt/train. I think I will end up making a pillow for our bed with the fabric floral detailed part of my dress and made a baptism dress for a future child, but I can't bare to tear it apart yet. I'm not sure if we will do a rock the dress shoot on the beach....and if we have a little girl, I would love to take a picture of her in the dress playing "dress up".....bahh long story, I haven't done a darn thing and its hanging in our spare room! Lol

  • I know I'm too sappy to part with it(after we get married). It'll probably hang in the back of our closet untouched for years.
  • I have not been able to decide yet either!  Right now its it the bag hanging in the guest room.  I cannot imagine parting with it, but also know I will never where it again (sad face).  I had thought about making christening dresses (that is my mom did with hers) but my dress is sparkly and lace so I'm not sure that would work out, haha.  I know I will play dress up for sure (I already warned my husband not to be alarmed if he finds me vacuuming in it one day). But eventually I will probably sell it or donate it.

  • 6 months post-wedding and mine is still hanging in our guest bedroom closet in a garment bag. It has been cleaned, but I didn't have it preserved and boxed because I didn't want to shove it in the attic and never see it again :( I still have no idea what I want to do with it, but I'm pretty positive that I can't tear it up or give it away - so that pretty much leaves it hanging in the closet. Lol.

Things I have seen are making a baptismal gown, making a quilt, making a tree skirt, framing in a shadow box....

For my wedding we took a small piece of lace from my moms dress and used it in a bracelet (in a circle-type charm, but it didn't dangle, it was in the chain). The plan was to make a second bracelet from my dress, and a third from my sisters. They are small and dainty so you could wear them all together. And we would keep them as a family heirloom to for our future baby girls to wear on their wedding day. So, when the time comes for my sister to get married, ill have to chop a penny-ish sized piece of off for that.

Wow - I LOVE the P952!! The 8862 is beautiful also, but we're having a tiny wedding on a mountain so I'm not sure that's appropriate.

Would you sell it, @Southernbelle0915? And if so, what size?

  • I'd love to do another photo shoot with my dress on. My photographer was awful and we didn't get very many photos of me (or my husband for that matter). Problem with that is I'd have to pay for a photographer, and attempt to do my hair and makeup myself, which I am awful at. If I had room in my closet it would most likely sit there, but I have a teeny tiny apartment with no place to put it, hence it still being on my couch!

  • I had mine cleaned (not preserved) right after the wedding.

It has been hanging in the basement for almost a year now. I already have my Christening gown for our kids to wear, so no need to use it to make those.

I just plan on keeping it, I guess.

  • Now I feel like there's something wrong with me for not being sentimental with inanimate objects, lol...I had my dress cleaned & shipped off to Brides Against Breast Cancer about 3 weeks after our wedding.  I didn't really see the point in keeping it and it's "preserved" in our wedding pictures.

Plus, I absolutely loved my dress and I know there's a lot of people who may not be able to afford something like that otherwise, so it was a win/win to me to give someone else the chance to love my dress like I did, plus that profit going to help a good cause.
  • I'm getting mine shortened so I can wear it when FI and I go out to fancy restaurants.
  • Mine is hanging in its bag, in my closet, still dirty from my wedding which was 3 months ago. I've been lazy. I'm leaning towards selling it, I'm just not sure when. I don't want to part with it just yet.

  • I haven't even bought mine yet so I may feel differently later, but a friend of mine had a pretty easy time of selling here on eBay and then using the money for a bedframe. I like the idea of the money going back into something useful for our future home.
