Sound Guy

Okay, so I wasn't sure which board to post this in, and you ladies have been super helpful, so I figured I'd start here.

Our ceremony/reception venue is a private home with a gorgeous backyard, and their package was an amazing deal (and the only thing we could afford really). With the booking we have the ability to use their "sound guy", Sam. He's not an actual DJ, but he is the sound board technician for the church that the venue owners go to, and he has done the music at all of the weddings they host at the venue. They have all the necessary music equipment, we provide the music we want to play (through CD or MP3 or even our phones), and he plays what music we want when we want it played. At least, that was my original understanding of how it would work.
The problem is that FI and I want a lot of swing music, which we haven't been able to find to put on a CD or MP3 player, without spending a ton of money purchasing the music at least. So we came across the program Spotify. It's kind of like Pandora, but I like it much better. Through Spotify we have found all of the music we've been wanting, and we can even put the music into playlists like "Ceremony", "Dinner", "Dancing". All he would have to do is play our Spotify playlists off of a computer or a phone (both of which can hook up to his sound system).
However, when we asked about whether he would be willing to use Spotify through our computer or phone, we were told that he prefers to work off of a CD and that he wants us to put all of the music we want on a CD, in the exact order that we want the music played in. So basically he would just hit "play" on the CD and let it go through the order of music. The problem that I have with this, is what happens when the day of timing is faster/slower than we thought it would be? For instance, we will start playing pre-ceremony music at 4pm, and the ceremony will start at 4:30pm. So if we put exactly 30min of pre-ceremony music on the CD, followed by what we want played for the ceremony, what happens if our ceremony starts ten minutes later than planned? I don't want just silence if there's a gap like this. So I'm not sure what to do now.
All of this conversation has been through the venue owner as a middle man, but she has finally given me Sam's number so that we can speak directly about everything. I was just hoping to get some opinions or insight from you guys before we talk. We never met with any actual DJ's, so I have no idea how they work. And I'm not sure how best to handle this situation.
Any thoughts?

Re: Sound Guy

  • Talk to Sam and see what he says first before you stress about it. I am sure he is capable (and most likely willing) to work off of your spotify playlists!

  • I would certainly start off by talking to Sam.  It could be the owners prefer everything on CD but Sam could care less.  If it does come down to having to use CD's then be sure to add some additional pre-ceremony music.  If he is a good sound tech he will know how to fade out the music and then set up the next set of music.

My FH actually is one of the sound guys for his church, and if I've learned anything it's that sound guys are rather flexible, but if they are told to do a certain thing, they will do it that way.

In theory if he works (or volunteers) at a church and regularly does the music for weddings at this venue, he shouldn't have a problem with fading in and out of music.

Though, my thoughts on why he might want a CD instead of a Spotify list:
    1) CD sound quality is way better. Audiophiles would agree with that statement. (Personally, I can't tell the difference, but it seems that most sound guys are audiophiles)
    2) Spotify is free (or at least what I know of it, it is), which means you don't own the music. Sometimes DJs or owners or sound guys are picky about it and won't play music you (or they) don't own.
    3) Spotify, to the best of my knowledge, requires an internet connection. What happens if the internet cuts out, or is slow? If it's a free Wifi spot, then I am betting guests other people near the area will tap into it and that will really bog down your internet speed, which means your music will probably have some delays in loading/playing/streaming.

Just some thoughts from the other side....

I hadn't even thought about the internet connection part! Thank you for bringing that up! That is definitely something I'll need to think about, and might even be why he didn't want to use Spotify. I know that there's an option to listen offline with a paid subscription, so if that's the route we end up going I'll have to look into that.
  • @simplykayla ~ My FI has a paid subscription.  It runs $9.99 a month and allows him to download all music and play on any device.  Pretty inexpensive if you want to go this route.
You mentioned putting it on your phones and I don't recommend that. While Spotify is playing if a text or alert comes through it turns down the music for a few seconds and you hear that alert.

Okay, cool! That is pretty inexpensive. FI and I want a lot of swing music, and Spotify is one of the only places we've been able to find the songs that we want, so that's why I like it!
Thank you for mentioning the thing about the phones! I never would have thought of that. We'll probably stick to the computer then if we go that route!
  • You are welcome!!  We are going this route as well.  We bought a portable sound system because our venue only has a CD player where we are having the reception.  Down in the vineyard itself we wouldn't have music otherwise.  LOL
