Pampering Yourself

On a normal basis "pampering" to me is having the house to myself for a couple of hours. I've had several friends, and reading articles, that say I should be doing more.  So I have booked a couples massage for FI and I this evening.  I've made appointments for the next several months for mini facials.  I'm contemplating a pedicure as well.

So any of you ladies doing things to pamper yourself before the big day?

  • I might use crest strips on my teeth if I remember, but other than that, nothing really. I'm not against "pampering" in general, but it is also not something I do often.

I have gone for massages, but don't care to go often. I don't get my nails done, but they usually look really nice on their own (and I will usually paint them from time to time for the fun of it.) Facials- eh. Yeh, I do look nicer after them, but it's not really noticeable or anything.

I will get my hair highlighted right before the wedding, but I would have done that anyway. I guess I'm pretty boring!

My dentist's office offers a free zoom teeth whitening as a wedding gift to their clients. But when I did that whitening 6 months ago, DAMN that hurt!!! My teeth hurt for a couple days, vicoden didn't even help! If I remember correctly, you are in the chair for (4) 15 minute sessions, I only lasted 2.5 of those sessions, it was just way too painful. Soo, with that said, I think I'm going to pass on the free teeth whitening.
  • I am getting three facials leading up to the wedding (my second is next weekend I believe), and then the weekend before the wedding I am getting waxed and buffed too. (full body exfoliation/massage treatment thing, bikini and eyebrows) Then the Thursday before the wedding I am getting a mani/pedi with my mom and MIL.

I tend to splurge on that kind of stuff anyway though, and while this is more than normal, it isn't out of the realm of possibility either. I will say that next year I won't be doing that much though!!

  • I might get facials Sept/Oct.  I think I've only had my nails done like 6 times in my life (my horses get theirs done like clockwork every 6 weeks, so what's that tell you about my priorities? *g*).

I am trying to decide if I should have my stylist color my hair, or not before the wedding.  As it is now, I'm dying at the idea of paying $85 to have someone style my hair (actually, I guess it'd be $170 with a trial AND the day of).

I'd rather spend my money on things that are fun to me.

Although, I've been doing acupuncture once a month for about 5 or 6 months now.  I -love- it.  I guess that's my monthly pamper.
  • I LOVE acupuncture! It's actually covered under FSA/HSA money if you have a plan like that. :-) I haven't been in a loooong time though, it required to much maintenance.

  • It's not covered under our healthcare plan, but, duh, I should have done that here at work to pay for it!  *headdesk*  Open enrollment JUST closed.  Good job dingus.  *sigh*

I probably should go more often than I do, but yeah, it's not something I can afford twice a month right now.  But, I always feel SO relaxed and better when we finish up.  Went for back issues/shoulder issues, and now we're doing some work for my gall bladder issues.

I think next I want to try it for weight loss.  Why not, right?  Always feels good.  :)

What I find funny is NONE of the men in my family want to try it.  FI has back issues and chronic headaches, but is scared of the needles.  My dad has debilitating back issues, but he's also scared of the needles.

Me?  I run to the acupuncturist with happy glee, because I always feel better when I'm done!
  • I am definitely into the pampering! I get my nails done every 3 weeks, so the day before the wedding I will be getting a mani/pedi with my BM and MOH.  I am also going to get a hot stone massage (I usually do this once a year after Christmas because I ask for g/c as gifts) the Thursday before the wedding all by myself so I can really really relax! :)

  • I had a three series of microderm done a few months ago.  My makeup artist told me to get a facial a few weeks before the wedding. I get mani and pedis all the time.  However,  I am in desperate need of a massage.  I think now that the invites are out I deserve it!

  • I get therapeutic deep tissue massage once a month for back and joint issues and while the rest of my family considers it "pampering", I beg to differ!  She beats me up!  It's what keeps me functional, however, and I recommend it to anyone with chronic back problems.

I am going for a pedicure this afternoon, so I look pretty for my shower on Saturday!  Pedicures are one of my only regular indulgences and I relish them!

  • I don't really do much pampering. I get my nails done every 2-3 weeks and that's it. I can't even get a pedi cause my nerves are always shot. I don't like people touching me.

My FI and I had a couples massage in March and never again will I get a massage. I was more tense coming out of there than before I went in. But that was a very memorable day. That evening he took me out for dinner and after we got home he proposed.

  • I keep thinking I should go try a massage, or something, but  I haven't yet. I've had one pedi, one mani, and one facial in my life. (None of them were at the same time) I don't really plan on doing anything extra special, though, Ulta just emailed me a coupon for 30% off any dermalogica treatment in their salon, so I might take them up on that.... my acne has flared up for no reason.
  • I get massages regularly because my muscles get very tense from my scoliosis. I go to the chiropractor every three weeks and get a ninety minute deep tissue massage with about the same frequency. The massages are PAINFUL, but I feel great afterward.

Before the wedding, I'm going to get a pedicure and get my nails buffed. The big thing I'm looking forward to is that I'm getting bridal mehndi on my feet and legs. I have to do it a few days before so the henna has time to sink in. It's going to pretty much be the greatest thing.

  • One of the girls I dance Tribal with did some mehndi before our last performance (gave it about 3 days to set before the performance); it's beautiful!!  I've always wanted to do it myself, but never really felt like I had a "reason".

I think that's going to look so awesome on your wedding day!  I cannot WAIT to see ya'll's pictures!!!
  • I'm in so much pain from my massage last night!!!!  Therapist ended up doing a deep tissue massage because I'm so stressed.  FI and I talked last night and he said I needed to go a couple more times before the wedding.  YAY!!!  Hopefully next time won't hurt so bad!  LOL

  • @alisonmarie658: Shoes for the ceremony, no shoes for the reception. I hate shoes.

  • Those photos post-shoes are going to look awesome paired with your dress @thejucheidea!!

@rustytammy; they sometimes can.  Hope you drank lots and lots of water to flush your system!!  :)

But that was nice your FI said to keep on going.  :)
  • @shayla ~ Drank lots of water yesterday and drink more today.  I swear my eyeballs are floating!  LOL  FI is awesome that way!  ;-)

  • @rustytammy  I've been doing deep tissue massages for over a year, and sometimes I still hurt the next day, but it's SO worth it.  I know my therapist is working out the things that give me chronic pain.
  • @thejucheidea - i hate shoes too.  however, I wish i wore them today to work instead of flip flops - because what I hate even more than shoes is WET PANTS at my ANKLES and it is POURING out :)

as for pampering - I know I'm late to this game - but I try to get pedicures every two - three weeks because I'm awful at doing my own toes and I always have open toed shoes on - except when exercising.  massages - I've done a few - but I have SOO much trouble relaxing on the table and I end up talking to the masseuse the whole time.

Funny massage story - the last time I went with a good friend of mine I had just finished "running" the Goofy Challenge in Disney World (half marathon on Saturday, full marathon on Sunday then walking around in the parks).  When I got into the massage - the lady told me how tight I was.  She then told me she wished she was allowed to massage my glutes - but it was against company policy.  Me not thinking agreed with her and told her it was such a silly rule.  Then I walked out realizing I just told the lady she should have been able to massage my butt!
