Why, sales lady, why?

So I went shopping for my wedding dress for the first time. I had two appointment at two different bridal shops. I found one and fell in love with it at the first one. I am super picky so I made a mental note and pushed on.

At the second boutique I found an AMAZING dress. Its absolutely perfect. And then the sales lady shows me the price tag...It's $1,000 over my budget. If I told you my budget in the beginning and stressed that I HAVE to stay under it, why would you allow me to try something on thats not in my price range?

I know that this is such a #firstworldproblem, but I'm super aggravated.

What did she say when you reminded her about your budget??
  • That is really annoying, and she should have known better. I would probably try to talk to the owner/manager and explain to them what happened and see if they can do anything about the price.
  • That is seriously annoying - when I first went, I was shocked that the one sales lady didn't even ask my budget - she just started pulling dresses. I had to stop her and tell her to keep it under a certain price point. Definitely did NOT buy my dress at that shop.

Have you looked to see if any other stores in your area carry that designer's dresses? It may be possible for you to find it at a lower price point, if you're willing to do some comparison shopping.

  • That is annoying, The first thing I was asked was my budget! Then when I wanted to see a dress that was over budget the lady let me know before I tried it on. Have you seen if you can find it second hand? Or at another store?

  • the salon i got my dress at does not carry high end gowns the most that she has price wise is 1200-1500 and thats maybe a handfull of gowns. mine was 925.00 but i wanted to have another strap added to the one strap so it was an extra 75 was not a problem. every salon should ask you  what your budget is call them and see what they can do for you if you really love that gown
  • misssunshine17 It was the owner. Its a highly reccomended but small salon in our area.

allispain Unfortunatly I tried to sneak peak at the tag in the dress...They keep in the designer tag and sew in their own. And they have their own coding system so theres no way you can find a style number. All I know is that its a Marisa gown.

I talked with my FI (hes such an amazing man) and he said that if its what I want then I should get it. I'm a tad more level headed so I think if shes willing to come down on the price its a possibility.

My grandparents are going to be visiting in a week or two and want to see my top 3 dresses so far, so I will go back and try it on once more. But I'm deff going to keep looking and I have no problem walking away if she won't budge.
  • JoanE2012 She was like "Oh I know, but I also know that this was the dress for you." Thanks little italian lady. You got an eye for pulling dresses, but a terrible eye on peoples budgets.

Ok - well you know the designer at least. Have you checked their website? What's the gown look like? Maybe we could help play detective :-)

  • Ick. *hugs* I sell for a living, and I do my best to be mindful of peoples budgets. I'd try to haggle a bit if possible, some places have no tolerance for it, but you'd be surprised what can happen if you ask.

Also, I'm not in wedding dresses, but if I know someones' budget, I won't show them somehting more then 100-200 over their budget without telling them first. and as for the 100-200 over price range, I a.) have coupons b,) have a lot of people who want to spend under the minium amount for a non crappy mattress. Yay industry specifics.

  • I would stay away from this shop.  If you cannot trust her before she even has your money and commitment, what will happen when you are locked in and she starts running up the alteration charges?
  • Lauderdale Pink true story! after hours of searching online for this dress I finally found it. Its a Marisa 880. Its almost impossible to find. I have a few emails out to some stores so we'll see what happens!
  • So just a quick update. I was able to find the dress for $1,000 less at another bridal store! I just went yesterday to see it in person one more time. I walked out with a receipt in hand!
  • Excellent! Glad it worked out!
