Color Dilemma

Hi! Pretty new here, but I have a quick question...

I pretty much have a different color scheme I want for every day of the week. I can't decide. My top two were plum/dark teal/cobalt blue and navy blue/pale yellow. But for some reason, neither completely jumped out at me. I was picking up my dress at David's Bridal yesterday and they had a little set up with this beautiful dusty, dark rose colored bridesmaid dress (it's called "rosewood" at DB) next to a champagne one. I had to take a picture of them I loved it so much. It seemed perfect considering my dress (it's white but has an ivory lace overlay).

Now, my question is. I would want bridesmaids to wear the rose color. Groomsmen though... the absolute #1 desire for my fiancé and I at this wedding is for the men to wear gray tuxes, preferably dark charcoal gray tuxes. What would you suggest for their ties/vests? Would champagne work with a gray tux? Ah! I'm probably thinking way too hard about this :p

Re: Color Dilemma

  • imageThere's a grey tux with a champagne vest and tie just so you can see what it might look like.

  • I think it would work just fine - it's subtle as opposed to in-your-face, which I happen to like. Also, I much prefer the champagne over having groomsmen wear pink ties. It always looks like that's the bride's vision and the groom just said "yes, dear" as opposed to having a say in his own wedding attire :-)

And I think grey would be lovely! That's what DH wore for our wedding - such an elegant look!

  • I'm not a fan of gray tuxes...My fiancé was in a wedding two years ago and the gray just looks hideous on all the guys.
  • I love gray suits. Tan would be another good option. It may look great, or clash wish, the champagne, though. Depends on the colors.

  • I had my heart set on grey as well, as I thought it would compliment my BMs coral dresses the best - but after looking at pics online, I have to agree with @mig78 that grey is not universally flattering at all. I think the combo you've picked looks great, but unless the men are all built like the mannequin (male model thin), you may not be happy with the overall look.
  • If you go with gray, champagne will be fine with it. If you decide to go with tan, do a rose tie. Either way it will be fine.

    Anniversary
  • If your heart is set on gray I'd do DARK gray (more like charcoal) SUITS, not tuxes.

This. My H was in a wedding where the GMs wore charcoal Vera Wang tuxes. They looked terrible and the pictures will look super dated (they already do). If you can get a good deal, it'd probably be close to same cost to buy a dark gray suit as it would be to rent a tux AND the GMs get to keep it.

As for the ties/vests, I would not have the GMs "match" the BMs - it ends up looking like prom. If you do a suit, have them just wear ties (no vest). Our colors were navy/ivory. We got ties at Macy's that were ivory with a small (not bold) navy stripe. They looked good.

As for your color scheme, if you're having your BMs wear the rosewood, I'd pick one accent color. Any more than that and it's hard to make things look cohesive. Of the colors you listed above, I would choose navy. Don't forget to ask your FI for his opinion before you go willy nilly with color combos. It's his wedding too!

  • The nice thing about getting buying dark gray suits instead of renting gray tuxes is that they're very versatile for all suit-wearing occasions after the wedding.

I can't get this out of the quote box! Sorry for the formatting...

My FI has his heart set on these exact tuxes but I HATE THEM for this very reason - I feel like our pictures will look dated immediately. Ugh. I am trying to drop subtle hints about preferring black, but in his mind these will go GREAT with my black bridesmaids dresses.

  • To your original question, I think that they grey and champaign look good together. It's a subtle look and will coordinate well with almost anything.

I would probably have the men buy suits instead of renting tuxes. We did the charcoal grey suits for our wedding and I loved them. DH had a custom one done that cost us just over 500, and my brother got his from Macy's (they also tailored for him) and paid just under $200. Now my brother has a good suit he can wear for interviews, weddings, whatever.
