Re: Okay, am I overreacting?

  • yes, you are overreacting.

  • I can see both sides, but I also think it's too much thought about something that isn't meant to be deconstructed down to that level.

    Y'all need some drinks.
  • Overreacting.

Can I just say, I know that in many cases these pronunciations are like a hundred years old, but they annoy the hell out of me. There is a town near where DH grew up and it has the most mangled pronunciation but that's just what it is and it makes me want to yell at these people for being ignorant hicks because really, you are pronouncing letters in this town name that aren't in the farking spelling.

Hmm, coming from an area that has a lot of this I worry that the whole fundraiser could be a flop.  People may be willing to joke, but to see the whole thing in print may not come across like you want.  It's not what you asked, but I can see this quickly turning bad.

Hm.  I'll have to keep thinking about this.

IDK, I just get this feeling that this is about patting yourself on the back for being smarter than stupid hicks, white trash, country folk, poor folk etc. that this region can pull out of people.

And since atheists/freethinkers/skeptics already suffer from a "know-it-all" and "superiority complex" reputation, I'm not too eager to further it.

  • i mean, does it look like this

with sections of missouri labeled "cool asians", "theatre dorks", "jocks" and "black hotties"?

  • Oh mean....speaking of pronunciations....Buena Vista college....BEYOONA.  No.  NO.

Nope.  The idea is to have some of picture (either drawn or real) with town name/sign, then local pronunciation under it.  Pictures are not drawn yet.

FWIW, the example I gave, the XXX pronunciation?  That wouldn't be considered a "local".  weird way to say something.  No one I know, living in the larger city since I was 13, would say XXX like that.  I've never heard XXX pronounced like that.

The specific subset would be people lacking a decent education, probably from one of the small towns surrounding us, and probably poor. And I feel like it's making fun for our entertainment.
