What to do instead of the first dance??

I'm definitely not having a first dance. I'm wondering what else I could do instead. My groom sings so he will be singing at the reception but he doesn't want to sing twice. The best man and maid of honor will also be singing for us so my other idea would be for us to stand in the middle of the room while they sing to us.   Any other ideas???

First dances aren't required. You don't need anything to replace it.

I would be more concerned about your reception turning into a performance. Generally speaking, guests don't want to sit awkwardly listening to several vocal performances. They want to chat, eat, dance, and have a good time.

  • I agree that you don't need to replace it.  The best part of the reception is after all the formalities are finished and people can just have a good time without interruptions.  Skipping the dances will give you more time to visit with your guests :)
  • Yeah. I agree. Don't want a first dance, don't do it. You also don't have to do a formal cake cutting, bouquet or garter toss. All optional.
  • You don't need to have a first dance and you don't need to provide a placeholder. If what you're worried about is "opening the dance floor" you can have your DJ announce that the dance floor is open if people aren't already dancing.

  • Why do you need something instead?  Just don't do it. Problem solved. Now go get a margarita.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Just don't do a first dance if you don't want to.  Go ahead and start eating, drinking, and any other entertainment that everyone can participate in.

I wouldn't have your FI sing, though.  It's one thing for couples to do the first dance, but otherwise, they shouldn't treat the guests as a captive audience for their performing arts skills.

That would be even more awkward than it sounds.
