Winter wedding?

My fiancé and I are relocating from two different cities (one east coast, one west coast), to a brand new city for both of us this coming spring -- and new city and new work assignments plus a summer or fall wedding seems to be too much to handle! So, we're looking at holding our Vegas wedding in Winter 2015, likely on a Saturday evening in January, for about 55-60 guests. It is admittedly a kind of "off" time of year for a wedding; not a super popular choice as the other seasons, and I am a little unsure about it all. Is it inconsiderate to our guests to schedule a wedding just a few weeks after the holidays, when many often take time off or travel at the end of the year? Is the city still busy and high energy, or is it a slower pace? While I fully expect our guests will bring the party, it'd be fun to have some company at the after party hotspots and throughout the weekend ( especially for our single friends!). And is it too cool/ windy/possibly rainy to try to do anything outdoors? I had mixed suggestions from a few venue coordinators I've talked to so far, and am second guessing the timing a bit. I welcome your thoughts -- this board had been such a fantastic resource so far!

Re: Winter wedding?

  • Hi and welcome,

I think if you give your guests enough notice it should be fine. I would personal go into march or april. Jan is pretty chilly. (http://weatherspark.com/averages/31890/1/Las-Vegas-Nevada-United-States) I think it would be to cold to do anything outside. When we went in the 3rd week of Jan it was a medium jacket and pants weather, at night it was winter jacket weather for sure.

The city is less busy in jan, I think most people wait until it gets warmer. Some places will still be busy.

I have been told downtime for weddings is end of Nov until the 2nd week of Feb (due to the chilly weather) and June til Sept (due to the heat).

    I hope this helps. :)

  • Regarding the January timeframe, I don't think its inconsiderate, but you might have a few more no's just because it is a busy, expensive time.  That being said, if you are talking Jan 2015 and give your VIPs lots of notice they will have plenty of time to start saving and planning.

The city will probably a little slower than Memorial Day, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.  MLK weekend is probably the busiest weekend in January.  The 'off' times are nice because you don't have to wait as long at restaurants and buffets, table limits are usually lower and you can get great deals at the half price show tickets!  Not to mention the room rates!

Weather could be a factor depending on where you and your guests are coming from.  We've traveled from AZ for NYE a few times and I've always been freezing at night.  But coming from a colder climate, it could feel a bit warm with no snow on the ground.    Check out the weather thread, there is a good link on there.

Good luck and congrats on all your upcoming adventures!

  • With enough notice Im sure your guests would be able to make plans for your January wedding.I cant comment on the weather because Ive only visited Vegas in November (which was beautiful weather by the way - warm and sunny during the day and just a light chill at night). You probably want to keep an eye out for conferences though. The CES expo or something like that is on in January and makes things stupid expensive all over Vegas.

  • Thanks for your replies. The weather does seem cool for the timeframe we're considering, but it is true that about 75 percent of guests will be coming from colder climates, so it might be a welcome break from shoveling! I do worry about being close to the holidays, but I also think we would give a long lead time for people to consider attending. We're inviting a small number of people, and know that distance and price and time of year will be factors for them to consider. MLK may actually be a good time since it will be a little busier and I bet that half our guests would have that Monday off of work, which could be helpful for travel. Your replies have been helpful. I know I will post more as the plans come together :)
