Assigned tables or open seating?

What are you doing? If you're doing assigned tables how are you dividing people up?

We are doing assigned tables. I am trying to put people together that are either related or know someone else. If I have a friend that doesn't know anyone, I am trying to put them with people that I think they will get along with.
  • We will be doing assigned tables. We'll only have as many chairs as we do guests, because there's no room in the space for any extra. So it's easier for us to do assigned seating so people aren't having to figure out who can sit where (It's already giving me enough of a headache to do the seating chart - I couldn't imagine leaving them to figure it out themselves the day of!)
We're dividing people up by circles. My aunts/uncles/cousins at one table, his aunts/uncles/cousins/grandparents at two tables, etc. We think everyone will be more comfortable that way, because neither of our families are very social. The only place that we're "mixing" families is our parent's tables.
  • We're assigning tables, based on familial relationships, who is currently speaking to whom within those families, and who we think will get along with each other.

Both sets of parents are still married (mine happily; his not), so that makes it a little easier.

    exactly this.
    S'mores. Just S'mores please.
  • Same as PPs.  I despise open seating.  I feel like it's the lunch cafeteria in middle school on the first day of school.
  • assigned tables definitely. not a huge fan of the "fend for yourself" seating. also, i think it makes it a bit more classic.

  • Ours is open seating, but it's because we have 2 long tables being set up, and it's family-style dining.  Just makes it easier for all of us.
  • We are doing assigned seating too. Our venue is a pretty traditional banquet hall, and as others have pointed out it might get too much like a cafeteria "where should I sit" type of situation.

  • Open seating.

  • We are doing assigned seating. So far, most of the tables have been pretty easy to set up and group guests - sorority friends, Fi's friends, my cousins, FI's cousins, his mom's friends, my mom's friends etc all break down quite nicely.  Some are a bit tougher, but most are obvious.

  • We are also doing assigned seating. We will be having tables of 8 and 10 - and I've already started grouping individuals on my spreadsheet.  I LOVE doing stuff like table assignments - so I'm looking forward to it :)

  • We are having assigned seating.  For the most part we should be good about grouping people, there is only 1 person that will conflict with a few people, and we can just seat that person with people they are already friends with.  I've been to weddings with open seating and had the worst luck.  Things worked out, but there's always groups of 6 people that want to sit together but there are 5 people sitting at a table for 8/10.
