Torn between two dresses. Again.

I posted a while back about being torn between a dress a bought for a previous, canceled wedding, and a new one I had found. The general consensus was the new dress, but then I fell in love with a third. I am out of control.

So now debating between the two, new dresses. One is very ethereal/quintessential bridal/a little princessy. The other is more fitted and sassy. While the second feels more like "me", I'm afraid I might regret not going with the more traditional ball gown.  That said, I'll be 35 on my wedding day and feel the more fitted dress is more sophisticated for my age. My feelings aside, objectively, which dress do you all like better?

More fitted dress: (I'd wear the bolero and veil for the ceremony, then remove them for the reception. The bolero and dress would also both be ivory, so the shades would match)

PS - sorry the pics are huge. ETS - don't read into smiles either. I had a boozy lunch with a girlfriend before trying on the dress in the first two pics.
  • Ball gown. And stop going to bridal salons!!
  • I also forgot to add - I've already bought both of these. Ugh. I'm officially a three dress bride. I had decided on the fitted one, and listed the ballgown on preownedweddingdresses. It came in recently, and I made the mistake of trying it on just for fun before taking pictures for an interested buyer.
  • I like the ballgown, but I have ball gown so I'm partial. It just looks more bridal.

  • I am in love with the ball gown (coming from a girl who wore a fit and flare and typically doesn't like ball gowns :) )
  • The ball gown.

  • Definitely the Ball gown

  • Thank you for the feedback, everyone! Those that I initially shared the dresses with voted overwhelmingly for the more fitted one, until they saw the ball gown in my actual size.

Would the fact that I'll be 35 on my wedding day make anyone side eye how princess-like the ball gown is?

I think it is fine.  It is a lovely dress (and I normally don't like ball gowns) and doesn't feel immature to me

  • I like the first one better. But seriously, you're just torturing yourself, so pick one and be done.

  • 1000% the ballgown.  And that is coming from someone who doesn't really care for ballgowns.  It is a beautiful dress and looks amazing on you!

  • You look great in both, but the first gown is absolutely gorgeous.

  • I love the first one the most. Definitely.
  • I'm not usually a ballgown fan but you look amazing in that first dress!

  • Thanks so much, ladies! I appreciate the advice. The ball gown it is. Going to pull my listing from preownedweddingdresses now!
  • I love the ball gown!
  • Both are beautiful dresses, but I see how the ballgown is more bridal.  You could wear a silhouette like the second gown next time you have a formal event, but you most likely won't have the chance to wear a ballgown again.
  • Thank you @Mdbride1012 and @CrazyCatLady3

I agree with the general sentiment that the ball gown is more "bridal" and that this might be the only time in my life when I can wear a gown like that. There is just something I really love about the more fitted silhouette - CrazyCatLady - I absolutely LOVE how your dress is a mix of the more fitted bodice and slimness through the hips, but is still very full at the hem and very bridal looking. I'm wondering if there is any way to narrow my ball gown slightly over the hips but keep the fullness at the hem.

I have a little fashion blog and I think my mom pretty much nailed it when she said, "you'd wear the fitted gown for the blog, but I love the ball gown for your wedding". I think the second gown is much more my personality, but I feel much more like a bride in the first one.
  • Well, normally I think separate reception dresses are a bit AW-ish, but since you already own the 2 dresses, why don't you just use the 2nd dress as your reception dress?  It would probably cost $$$$ to have the ballgown shape altered, and it sounds like you still really want to wear the fitted silhouette in some sense.  You can't return the dresses and will lose money on a resale anyway, so you could just wear both and then re-sell them both after the fact to recoup some money.

So, so tempting! But, I'd feel like such an AW that I'd be so uncomfortable the rest of the night. I think I'm going to stick with the ball gown, quit obsessing over this, and either sell the fitted gown or see if I could maybe have it dyed so I can wear it to a formal event or on our anniversary or something.
  • Love the ball gown but the other is so classy. Ballroom all the way!!!
