Travel Related "HALP!"

Speaking of Vegas, I am going in November for a race (rock n roll half), and I haven't purchased airline tickets yet.

I know there are few here that are familiar with this line of travel (@Wzz and mrs. conn, yes?)

I could google, but I find personal help easier (and I'm lazy), so please HALP!

I've got nothing but jealousy that you're going to Vegas.
  • -Does telling you I'm staying with my 60 y.o. parents in a hotel room (albeit a nice one) and going without my H help?

  • When I'm researching airline tickets, I go in this order...Southwest, travelocity, Orbitz.  If I find something cheaper than Southwest on Travelocity or Orbitz, I then got to the airline's website and see if it's even cheaper there.  I also check rates over a week or two, if I have the time.

I've tried to use kayak, but I hate it.

i don't ever use kayak, either. as strange as it sounds, it's easier to do what conn said.

usairways vacations always gave me good prices, i would also use them and southwest vacations for pricing info. i *think* they will also pricematch if travelocity and expedia offer something lower.

i never liked orbitz because the people who i know have used them always had some ridiculous cancellation issue (that normal people don't usually have - i am SO glad i am in a different line of work nowadays), so i generally avoid orbitz if i can.

if i am correct, you cant find southwest on any of the travel sites, so even if oyu use expedia/travelocity first and THEN southwest to compare, you're probably fine. at some point the legwork and time isn't worth the dollar or so difference. and i would always book with the airline or hotel directly if the prices are the same.

last, ebates will have coupon codes for the travel sites and most airlines/hotels. i go through them almost every day.

  • Ebates!?!?!  Why didn't I think of that?  I love ebates.

I have heard of weird cancellation issues on Orbitz.  I don't think I've used them to book a vacation in years. If I really have time to kill, I'll search more travel engines (hotwire, expeidia, etc).  But those are my go-to places for the initial search.

You cannot find Southwest fares anywhere but their site.  I think this is true of Airtran and other discount airlines as well.

It sounds time-consuming, however it really is only about a half hour or so of searching to get an idea of the average cost.

    And yes to Ebates!!
  • Okay, got it.  Ebates + Southwest/Expedia/Travelocity, etc.

Now timing?  Should I wait, or should I just keep checking?
  • Lowestfare is a good site for airfare.

i agree with conn on everything, as usual.

oface, its all going to depend. 21 days advance notice is always best, but it's vegas. prices change fast. it can't hurt to wait, but you never know. i used to tell people that right after a holiday weekend is when the prices start going up for the next season.

  • Well shi-crap (shit), that means labor day....*ugh-face*
  • Wz, why don't you like Kayak? I love Kayak. It searches everything (all airline websites, orbitz, etc) except Southwest. So Kayak & SW are all you need.

  • seconding e-bates for all travel. it's worth a shot. i've gotten cash back on hotel and car rental, although not airfare.

the last few years, we've been going almost entirely Southwest because of the free bags (even if the aifaire is a few dollars more - and it usually isn't - they make up for it in bag fees.)

SW also has the policy that if you see their flight cheaper after you book, they'll give you the difference in a credit - something to consider.

i don't like the popups and multiple windows. i am not what you would call internet savvy.

i also have the advantage of having a program (the GDS) that allows booking directly without having to use the internet at all except for southwest web fares, so there is that.
