Any short, busty women pick a non-mermaid gown?

Hi!

I'm short (5'2ish) and busty (D to DD depending on the bra brand).  However, I'm also oddly shaped.  Think an upside down pair.  I have a size 6 waist, but no hips.  All the advice I've seen for smaller, busty women suggest either a strapless A-line or a fit-n-flair or mermaid dress.  However, since I have no waist, hips, or butt, I look ridiculous in a fit-n-flair.  I've been to three bridal stores, and may have found 'the one' but I'm not sure.  It's an A-line and is tea length.  Well, it's not tea length on me, it actually almost hits the floor and gives me a cute peep toe.  Anyway, I was just wondering if anybody purchased a dress they loved that fit their frame and is under $1,500.  Any and all suggestions are welcome.  Thank you!

  • Sorry!  I posted in the wrong board and have no idea how to delete it or move it.  Sorry!
  • Your figure sounds pretty similar to mine except I'm a few inches taller than you. I am very busty but I have no hips or butt.

I ended up with a strapless, modified A-line dress and felt very comfortable in it. I hated mermaids on me.

What makes you unsure about the dress you like right now?

  • I'll answer anyway! I'm 5'1", plus size, and DDD/F chest. I tried dropped waist & fit and flair dresses and they just called attention to my belly and that's the part I want to hide the most. Fit and flair was what I thought I wanted but I wound up with a tulle ballgown, which is what I did NOT want in the least. But I love it :-) Sweetheart neckline, natural waist with a ruched style bodice and a fuller tulle skirt. It has a beaded belt but I'm swapping it out for a mercury colored sash with chiffon/satin flowers.

After 6 years and 2 boys, finally tying the knot on October 27th, 2013!

  • Yes! 5'4 with 36DD. Vera Wang "Diedre" dress - see my siggy. Looked awesome, added a crystal belt.

Thank you for the description of the dress you wore.  I guess I'm just a little unsure because I have no idea how the dress will look on me when it actually fits.  That's the other hard part.  I go in and try on a dress but it's too long for my height and too tight or small for my upper body frame. So I think it's the one, but it's hard taking a leap of faith with so many unknowns.

Thanks!  The dress looks gorgeous.  How did the bottom work out?  I've only tried on one or two with some detail or fluff on the bottom because the first one I tried on seemed to drown me out.  The dress looks like a great proportion though.  Congrats!

Congrats and thank you!  I am afraid of trying on ballgowns, but maybe I just need to take a visit and try some on.  I'm getting a few success stories about women my size finding a ball gown very flattering.  Thank you for the advice and nudging me in the direction of trying on a dress I hadn't previously considered!
  • If you find it hard to take the leap of faith and buy the dress you like, I suggest looking around somemore.  You should have no doubt about the dress, even it doesn't fit fully properly when your trying it on.

I think a mermaid style for you would totally show off how big your bustline is, unless that's what you want!  Perhaps a dress in a flowly fabric like chiffon, would work well for you, in a modified A line dress like Swazzle suggested.

  • the dress was awesome - it's very lightweight - those layers are almost sheer, and not too fluffy unless you want to add another layer underneath it. Honestly, when it arrived all I had to do was have it hemmed, it fit me that well (and of course bought awesome undergarments to suck me in).

  • I'm 5"3 DD and I loved my Casablanca 2072-- it was an A-line and it had a great fit. While trying on dresses I also liked the drop waist look, but it was hard to get the full visual because of my shorter frame.  even with it pinned something always looked "off."  The A line was fit to me and just highlighted everywhere it needed to.

  • One thing I'm really glad I did on my first trip to a bridal shop to try on dresses was trying on at least one of every major silloutette of dress, just to see how it fit and what I liked on me... I tried on a fit and flare, a mermaid, a ball gown, an empire waist and it became clear that the A line was the best option for me.  There is a big difference between what they look like on models versus what they look like on you.
  • I'm 5'3 and C.  I ended up with a strapless A-line (not a ballgown).  A line dresses are almost universally flattering no matter how tall/short you are or how thick/thin your waist is.

If you are very busty you will want to make sure the top fits properly so you are not tugging on it all day but otherwise it should work great!

That dress is gorgeous. Simply gorgeous.
