Not changing my name....now what?

I've decided not to change my name after the ceremony. I see lots of information about who to notify of a name change but is there anyone I should notify of marital status change--without name change? ie governmental agencies, employer, etc

Re: Not changing my name....now what?

  • Let your employer know - you'll have 30 days from the date of your marriage to make changes to your benefits if you want to.

  • I did change my name, so I'm not going to be too much help, but you'll at least want to notify your employer for reasons of insurance (assuming you and your husband go on the same policy) and to update your W4 for tax withholding (they take out less taxes once you're married!) You might want to think of anywhere your parents are still your emergency contacts (doctor, work, etc) and update that to your husband as well.

  • Excellent checklist, thanks @schatzi13.

H and I both kept our names. We changed to one health insurance (putting us both on the better, of course), combined our car insurances and renters' insurance, changed our wills, set up power of attorney (though I think that's automatic for a spouse, so that might have been overkill) and gave our official opinion on what will happen if our bodies ever naturally cease to function (i.e., resuscitate or not). We also made sure that, as PP mentions, H and I are listed as one another's emergency contacts.
Ah the "fun" part of getting married :-) This is all good to know, though! DH and I got just about everything on this list except for the DNRs - hadn't remembered that one.

  • Thanks everyone! We had not thought of car/renter's insurance or DNR orders!

    Best wishes to all......

  • I know this wasn't your question, OP, but for other posters - you can add your FI to your car insurance without being married. We got on the same policy when we moved in together and got a discount for multi-car. Also, our insurance company has an engaged discount separate from the married discount, so we're already getting another discount.

  • Here's a great website with lots of resources and a checklist for life-planning: http://getyourshittogether.org/. It's useful for folks regardless of marital status or name change. So far, I've notified by employer and made my husband the beneficiary of my life insurance and retirement account. We haven't gotten around to the car insurance or end-of-life planning stuff yet, but it's on our to-do list.
