Tipping for boudoir shoot?

Hello! I am having a boudoir shoot today as a surprise gift for my fiance for our wedding next week.
I bought a decent livingsocial deal to the photo shoot. It includes hair and makeup, the shoot, a disk with 5 images and 2 prints.

Should I tip, and if so, who? MUA, photographer (it is her company)?

Thank you for your help!

Re: Tipping for boudoir shoot?

  • A lot of people don't tip folks who own their own business. I can see it both ways, but I personally, I always do if they did a good job.

With a photographer, I would wait to tip until you see the work. If you like it, tip them. With the MUA, tip her if you like the work - as you would at a salon.

  • I would tip them both 20% of the actual (not livingsocial) price. However, because I'm a jerk, I wouldn't tip the photog until after I got my prints. The MUA I would the day of since her work is over.

Disclaimer: I'm kind of a jerk about tipping. When a job is done well, I tip very well, but I don't like when it is assumed I should give 20% for mediocre work or for a job unfinished at the tip (ie- tipping before getting photos back.)

I suppose that I should've asked- what do you think is an appropriate tip for the MUA? I will tip her today. I can't find a price or value for the make up and hair services and don't want to be cheap or crazy over-tip.
I've only had my hair and make-up done professionally one time before and it was for my wedding trial so I don't have a lot of experience with this part of the service industry.
  • It depends on where you live. Look up an average priced, full-service salon in your area and see the price of getting your hair styled or in an up-do (depending on what you get) and make-up. Their menus are probably posted on their website.

I would say $15-$20 would be a great tip. $10 if it was okay!

Have fun! .. and update on how it goes. I may be interested in doing one, but Im a bit self conscious (arent we all)... so yeah!
  • @d2va You should do it! It was a lot of fun!

I was surprised that I had a male photographer but after chatting with him I felt completely comfortable. He was very professional.  I even ended up taking some bare chested shots!

He showed me a couple of touched up images- and I looked hot! He was able to smooth out some rolls and I looked flawless.
For the record- I am not flawless and recently gained some weight so I have been feeling less than stellar. I am a size 12 with a couple of bellies, haha!
The photographer showed me pictures of ladies larger than myself who also looked fabulous.
    I'd recommend it to anyone!

I'd tip at least 15%, but round up if the cash quantities you have require it (assuming its good work).
