pool or no pool?

First off, my MIL has been staying with us for the past couple of weeks while she is going through rehab. Well, her and I were watching tv the other day, and a commercial came on about pools. She casually asked me if I wanted a pool and I, with much enthusiasm, said that I would love a pool one day. That was the end, I didn't think anything of it. I wake up from a nap the next day (I work third shift) and H whispers to me in the kitchen that she said she would buy us a pool next summer for all we have done for her. What?!?

Like I said, I would love a pool, I'm just not sure it is worth it right now. Our house is definitely a starter home, it only has two bedrooms, with a room in the basement that could be used as a third if we had too, but preferably not. While she would be paying for the pool and installation, we would have to pay for the upkeep, which is totally fine. H is totally stoked about it, he even knows how he wants to build the deck already lol. I am just wondering if we should see if the offer would still stand after we moved to a bigger, more permanent house. On one hand, I don't want her to spend all that money if we only get to use it for two or three summers, but on the other hand, I would reeaalllyyy love a real pool (as if you didn't already get that part :) )

Sooo, what would you do? TIA!!

Re: pool or no pool?

  • I wouldn't do it now if you're definitely planning on selling within, say, five years. Apparently having a pool actually hurts the resale value of a house because of the upkeep necessary.

  • If you're already planning to move I would definitely wait.
  • It sucks, but I would wait too.
  • I would wait until I was in a place I planned to stay a while.
  • We aren't planning to move yet, we just bought it in Nov. But, I don't anticipate staying longer than 5 years, especially if we have kids. We don't have any yet, but we are trying now. If we have two within the next 5 years, we will definitely be moving.
  • If this is not a forever or long term home (and it doesn't sound like it I would not put the pool in.  Pools hurt your resale value in most areas, can increase homeowner's insurance cost and of course if you have kids there is the safety issue to consider (plus the additional cost of fencing and other safety items).

That is a generous gift and tough to turn down but I'm sure your FMIL would understand.

  • I would skip it, primarily because you are planning to move.  There are a lot of people out there who consider a pool at their house to be a major drawback and it can seriously narrow your buyer pool.  This, of course assuming you don't live in Phoenix, Florida, or somewhere else you can use it almost year round.
  • Even in Florida they tell us to buy the house with the pool already built as it's too expensive and you won't get your investment back to install it later.  Let her know you appreciate it and maybe help towards the down payment of a house with a pool in a few years.
  • Thanks for the help, everyone!! :)
  • I would do an above ground pool for now and wait and look for a house that already has the inground pool later. Much more cost effective that way and you would still have a pool for the time being.
