afternoon timeline

Does anyone have examples to share of their own afternoon timelines for reception? we will be finished with ceremony, photos/cocktail hour at 130pm. Lunch will be served either at 130 or 2, and we are planning to leave at 5. we plan to do a first dance, and there will be some toasts durinig lunch... but I'm not sure how to fill that 2.5 hours. (I haven't been to many weddings to base this on!)

Re: afternoon timeline

  • We had an evening reception, however it would've been pretty much the same if we had an afternoon reception.  We were introduced into the reception, went into first dance, then parent dances, then toast.  Then we had first course, danced, ate dinner, danced some more.  Cut the cake about 1.5 hours before end.  Then danced more.  We skipped the bouquet toss/garter, however if we did that, it probably would've been sometime before the cake cutting.  It went by really fast.  I wouldn't worry about trying to fill 2.5 hours.

  • We had an afternoon reception, and we were probably done with cocktail hour a little later than you will be.  Our reception was 5 hours, and we were busy the whole time with eating and dancing (and drinking).  We did our first dance when we were introduced.  We interrupted open dancing later on to do parent dances, and we did not do bouquet and garter tosses.  We had one toast/welcome while people were eating.  We had plated soup out when guests sat down (it was cold soup), then plated salad, and then buffet lunch.
