Cocktail Hour Food

My fiance and I want to have a wedding that is very 'us.'  We are having a hard time trying to think of ways to incorporate elements of us in the wedding without it looking overly tacky.  One way we were thinking about incorporating 'us' was by having a cocktail hour themed after what our favorite food to eat while we watch our favorite team (UNC Basketball) games.  Food examples would belong shot glass filled at the bottom with ranch with sticks of celery and carrots coming out of it (2 of each maybe?), onion straws (a little bit lighter than onion rings), and chicken wings (maybe more of a rub based than sauced base so it's not as messy).  We were also going to have our signature cocktail served at this time.  All of this would be served 'passed hors d’ oeuvres' style instead of displayed.

Our main colors are coral and green, and the rest of the wedding I want to be elegant, yet still relaxed & fun and very 'us.'

I'm newly engaged (just a little over 2 months), so I'm new at this whole planning thing!

Thoughts? Opinions? Any other way to think of doing this?  I'm open minded!   Help a fellow bride-to-be out!! :)

Re: Cocktail Hour Food

  • If your guest list is intimate enough to "get" your idea behind the hors d'oeuvres, then I would agree that the cocktail hour is the perfect place to inject a little whimsy.  However, if this only makes sense to you and your FI, then the choice of hors d'oeuvres might seem a little random to your guests.

Foods like chicken wings might be a bit complicated to eat without benefit of a table.  It's hard to juggle a cocktail and try to work a chicken wing.  Perhaps you could consider the boneless version.

If you can tie in the connection between your food choices and your reasoning, it might make sense and be fun for your guests.  Having said that, however, I'm not sure how many people actually take the time to "analyze" the rationale behind the food choices made.  I guess what I'm thinking is you need to take a "go big or go home" approach with this for it to make sense and be fun for anyone other than you and FI.  (I hope this is making sense.)

  • I also took advantage of cocktail hour as a good time to express who we are through food. Most of our guests completely understood what we were going for (how the slider and the asian chicken both represented DH while the mac and cheese and empanada represented me).

That being said, I really would avoid the wings, unless you're having a backyard BBQ type reception. I say this because of the fact that they're eaten with your hands, involve knowing on bones, etc. I know you mentioned having them in a rub rather than a sauce, but I think they'll still be pretty darn messy and just plain awkward to eat at a wedding.

Any chance you could pick food that would appeal more to your guests (and wouldn't require much explanation) but you could serve it on plates and with napkins that incorporate UNC's colors?

  • I would consider what others have said--ease of eating.  Things need to be something you can eat in a bite or two while holding your clutch and a wine glass.  There's no way I could do a chicken wing and look classy!  Also, the idea of getting the sauce on my hands, then needing a napkin, all while trying to hold a glass and purse, and mix and mingle would keep me from eating a wing.  Maybe there's some sort of buffalo meatball you could do that could be served easily with a spoon or mini fork?  Think manageable size foods you can eat with one hand or the utensil they are served with--wooden pick, mini-fork, etc.
  • I don't think these things will make sense to anyone unless they know you always eat these things when you watch UNC play basketball. I also think these things sound messy and/or greasy (not good for passed apps at cocktail hour).

What about regional foods? Or a recipe in your/his family that your caterer could use as inspiration to create an app? If you want the feel to be elegant but very "you" do you have a favorite restaurant where you could use their menu as inspiration?

I think it's really cool you want to make things "you" but I'd encourage you to think function and taste first when it comes to cocktail hour menu. It's the first impression your guests have of your hosting.
