Coordinating bridesmaids' dresses with wedding gown

Hi! I'm sorry if this has already been asked and answered. I've looked around, I swear!

My wedding is in May 2014. My dress is an ivory matte satin a-line with a halter neckline and champagne trim around the bottom. Or you could just look here. :)

I'm leaning toward the guava color from David's Bridal for my four bridesmaids (they're scattered around the U.S., so I figured DB would be easy for everyone), and I'm totally on board with having them pick whatever style they want. My question is: does the fabric really make a difference? Should I not want anyone to pick a satin dress since my gown is satin? Will it look bad if a couple have satin and a couple have chiffon, etc.? Or am I OK just telling them to pick whatever short dress they want in guava?

Really, really appreciate yall's help!

  • It really depends on your preferences. A lot of brides pick the color, length, and fabric and then let their BMs choose the style from there. I did this and it looked really nice.

As for the fabric - I actually think it looks nicer when the BM dresses are the same fabric as the bride's dress. For example, I wore a chiffon dress and so did my BMs - it gave everything the same romantic feel

  • I think it looks nice when the bridesmaids dresses are all one colour and one fabric.  I don't think they have to be satin if your dress is in satin, though.

  • It is really up to you. I am specifying the color, fabric, and hemline of my girls dresses and leaving the neckline up to them.
  • my sister's wedding-everyone had the same fabric (different styles) except for one bridesmaid-and she stood out and no one could figure out why. wasn't intentional, just wasn't specified by the bride. I agree to having the same color and fabric, just let them pick their style :)
  • Get the same fabric. It will look odd if some are chiffon and some are satin. Plus, the colour match may not be exact if they are different fabrics
  • Thank you all!
  • I think chiffon photographs better than satin.  I had a satin David's bridal bridesmaid dress that looked cheap and old prom-y in a wedding.  I couldn't wait to put that thing on ebay and get it out of my closet after the wedding!  Also, chiffon can be a little forgiving if someone sits down while waiting, etc.  It won't wrinkle as easily like satin, which gets lines in it.  Whatever style(s) you/they choose, I think chiffon looks more expensive and photographs better.
  • I would stick to just 1 type of fabric. Also, go to a store and see how the dresses you like look in person. I personally hate satin bridesmaids dresses, they are rarely very flattering and the fabric doesn't photograph too well. I chose chiffon for my girls and the dress we picked looks gorgeous on all of them (and they are all different shapes and sizes.) In general, every store I went to with the girls all told me to stay away from satin as it's unflattering, so we did just that and the girls love their dresses.

  • I picked out everything dress, shoes, and even the jewelry. My dress is satin with pleated detailing. I lucked up and found similar BM dresses. They will get to choose what color they wear and their hair.
  • Does anyone happen to have photos of chiffon and satin dresses mixed? I set a color and length. Some of the girls like chiffon and others satin.

I hope you're paying for the shoes and jewelry and also not counting those as their gift.
