Old New York

Anyone have ideas for an Old New York themed wedding????

Re: Old New York

  • You have to be a lot more specific. What do you mean? Like MadMed era? (1960?) I assume you're having your wedding in "Old New York", meaning in Manhattan at a historical building? Otherwise it might seem a little out of place. You can still do some kind of retro "theme" and not be "Old New York".

But remember, the only theme you actually need is "Our Wedding".
  • If you want to incorporate elements of "Old New York" (I don't know what that means so bear with me), I would do it through your colors, your decor, your stationary, your menu and your cocktails.

I would steer clear of a "theme party" though.

You can totally do something that'll be sophisticated, but the more theme-y the more it starts to look like a birthday party. KWIM?

  • I would go with art deco, speakeasy, and sinatra - inspired elements.

Here's one on a wedding blog:

  • There are all kinds of things associated with "Old" New York, so I think you need to be more specific.
  • My town in New York was founded in the 1500 s I think. How old do you mean?

  • I agree, you need to be a little more specific.

  • Thanks guys for all of your help and tips. What I meant by old New York is almost that super glamorous almost vintage 1920's feel but still modern. What I meant by theme was a way to get some colors, flowers and decor involved not actually an all out theme wedding, that seems a bit kiddish to me.

I would love for our venue to have that sophisticated look of a Saturday night wedding in NY but still be ultra sexy and chic. If you have any tips for that - that would be great. We were thinking of doing all old-timey New York landmarks as our table "numbers" in a antique frame and perhaps a super elegant low centerpiece of burnt orange and gorgeous florals. We are getting married in one of the tallest churches in the world in NYC in October so all ideas are welcomed. Thanks again!
  • Probably your best bet would be to Google the history of New York in the 1920s and see what you come up with.  My guess is that you'll come up with things like Broadway shows with chorus lines, the Stock Exchange with all the ticker tape, jazz clubs, and things like that.

I think it sounds cool to go the landmark route for table indicators. If you do this, I would either have a map or also include table numbers in addition to the landmark. I've been to a wedding where they did flags of countries they've traveled to and it look 20 minutes to find my seat (kid you not).

As far as colors, I always associate peach/soft pink, black and ivory/champagne with 1920's. For decor, I think long strands of pearls, lace, satin, feathers, antiqued brass, and sparkle. And champagne. Lots of champagne. For flowers, I'd do a variety of textures like peonies with roses, ferns and snap dragons. I don't know - I always think it's cool when each table has a different centerpiece so maybe different combinations of all these things plus weaving them throughout  your wedding.
